A major study that declared glyphosate "safe" for 25 years has just been retracted. This is the active ingredient in herbicides like RoundUp, widely used in Kenya's farms.

For decades, the "safety" of such chemicals rested on shaky science. Now, we must ask urgent questions: What is the long-term cost of this exposure on the health of our farmers, our families, and our environment? The potential link between rising cancer rates and unregulated agricultural chemicals can no longer be ignored.

It's time for rigorous, independent safety reviews and transparent regulation in Kenya. Our health is not collateral damage for productivity.

📸 KWA MUDA MAFUATANO: Jinsi Kuona Ugonjwa na Wadudu wa Shamba

Shamba lako linapokosa mazao?
Sio dawa tu inahitajika — kwanza, ujue nini inalenga.

👇 Tazama picha hizi — na ujue nini unayotambua:

🟫 3. Wadudu wa Miti ya Mimea (Aphids / Whiteflies)
→ Wanyama wadogo, wazuri, wanaoangaza kwenye upande wa chini wa viti.
→ Mimea inapoteza rangi, kuna mchafu kwenye viti.

🌾 “I Grew 10 Bags of Maize… And Made Ksh 5,000 Profit.”
Here’s How Much It Actually Cost Me.

My name is James. I’m a smallholder farmer from Nakuru.
Last season, I planted ½ acre of hybrid maize.
I thought I’d make enough to pay school fees.
Here’s what really happened.

💸 My Total Investment: Ksh 48,200

Seeds (Hybrid): Ksh 6,500
(One sack for ½ acre — no bargain, no substitute)
Fertilizer (DAP + Urea): Ksh 18,000
(DAP at planting, Urea at knee-high — skipped neither. Didn’t dare.)
Labor (Plowing, Weeding, Harvesting): Ksh 15,000
(Hired 3 people for 10 days. My wife helped too — she didn’t get paid.)
Transport (To market & inputs): Ksh 4,000
(Boda to town. Taxi to Naivasha market. Fuel was expensive.)
Pesticides & Miscellaneous: Ksh 4,700
(A little spray here, a bag of lime there… you learn fast when your crops start dying.)
🌱 Total Spent: Ksh 48,200

🚚 I harvested 10 bags (90kg each).
Sold them at Ksh 5,500 per bag in Naivasha market.
→ Total Income: Ksh 55,000

💰 Profit: Ksh 6,800

That’s it.
For 5 months of sunup-to-sundown work.
For sleepless nights worrying about rain.
For skipping meals so my children ate.
For carrying sacks on my back while my back screamed.

And still — I counted myself lucky.
Some farmers lost everything to drought.
Others sold at Ksh 4,000/bag because they had no transport.
Some bought fake seeds.

I didn’t win.
I just survived.

But I’m still here.
Still farming.
Still believing.

Because if we don’t speak the truth…
who will?

📌 If you’re a farmer reading this — you know this pain.
You’ve done the math.
You’ve cried over dry soil.

🍅 Top 5 Mistakes New Tomato Farmers Make (And How to Avoid Them) 🍅

Growing tomatoes successfully requires attention to detail — especially in the early stages. Here are five common mistakes new tomato farmers make, and how to correct them for better yields:

Planting Too Early
Planting seedlings before the soil and night temperatures are consistently warm (above 60°F / 15°C) can stunt growth or kill plants.
✅ Wait until after the last frost. Use black plastic mulch to warm the soil and protect young roots.
Overwatering or Watering the Leaves
Frequent overhead watering promotes fungal diseases like blight and mildew.
✅ Water at the base early in the morning. Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry between waterings. Drip irrigation is ideal.
Neglecting Pest Monitoring
Aphids, whiteflies, and tomato hornworms can quickly damage crops if not detected early.
✅ Inspect plants weekly, especially under leaves. Use neem oil or insecticidal soap at first sign of pests. Intercrop with marigolds to deter insects naturally.
Not Pruning Suckers
Unpruned suckers reduce airflow and divert energy from fruit production.
✅ Remove suckers — small shoots growing between the main stem and branches — regularly. Maintain 1–3 strong stems for optimal fruit development.
Failing to Provide Support
Tomato plants left unsupported develop weak stems and rot-prone fruit touching the ground.
✅ Install stakes or cages at planting time. Tie stems loosely with soft twine as they grow to keep fruit clean and healthy.
💡 Tip: Apply a balanced fertilizer with higher phosphorus once flowering begins to encourage strong fruit set — avoid high-nitrogen feeds that promote leaf growth over fruit.

Whether you’re farming on a small plot or larger scale, these practices improve plant health, increase yield, and support sustainable production.

Share this with another farmer who’s starting out — knowledge helps everyone grow.
