To understand differential leveling, it helps to be familiar with the standard terms used in the field:
​Benchmark (BM): A permanent or semi-permanent point of known, fixed elevation above a specific datum (like Mean Sea Level).
​Backsight (BS): The very first staff reading taken after setting up the instrument. It is always taken on a point of known elevation (like a Benchmark or a turning point).
​Foresight (FS): The last staff reading taken before moving the instrument to a new setup. It is taken on a point of unknown elevation.
​Intermediate Sight (IS): Any staff reading taken on a point of unknown elevation between the Backsight and the Foresight.
​Height of Instrument (HI): The actual elevation of the line of sight of the telescope when the level is leveled.
​Turning Point (TP) / Change Point (CP): An intermediate point on solid ground used to carry the line of levels forward. Both a foresight and a backsight are taken on this point.
