We promised you a deep dive into a magnificent Southern Tea Estate… the one making the bold, full-bodied low-country teas that markets from the Middle East to Russia can't get enough of. That estate is Handunugoda, just inland from the coast near Ahangama, the only tea garden in Sri Lanka planted this close to the sea.
But the low-country strength is only half of what they're known for. Their real secret, the one connoisseurs travel for… is Virgin White Tea. Before dawn, the youngest, still-unopened buds are lifted with small scissors straight into a waiting bowl. No hand ever touches the leaf, a method borrowed from a 4,000-year-old Chinese ritual once reserved for emperors. Where a standard low-country pluck fills 23 kilos a day, Handunugoda's pluckers gather barely 150 grams of this one.
Walk the rows, tour the 150-year-old British machinery still turning in the factory, and finish with a tasting and cake, peacocks wandering the grounds… three generations of the Gunaratne family, still doing it exactly this way. Then bring a version of that same ritual back down to the coast with you. Because that's what we've built at 3 Sisters… a verandah, a pool, an ocean horizon, and a pot of tea brewed exactly as unhurried as the one you just watched being made.
