Delacroix.
Morocco painted with fascination by Eugène Delacroix
A great master of French Romantic painting, Eugène Delacroix was fascinated by Morocco when he traveled there in 1832, at the invitation of his friend the Comte de Mornay, to accompany him on a mission from the King of France Louis-Philippe to Sultan Moulay-Abd-Rahman.
This stay in Morocco will only last a few months, but will exert a profound influence on all of Delacroix's work.
A great deal of information has come down to us thanks to the letters the painter wrote from Morocco and the sketchbooks he brought back from his discovery of the purity of light and the vividness of the colors of the costumes.
The small group travels to the then capital, Meknes. In Chefchouen, the painter mentions the presence of storks. Eternal Morocco offers itself to the fascination of Delacroix. In the freshness of the first spring, he rides along mountains, rivers, among oleanders and flowering fruit trees. He takes sketches that he transforms into watercolors in the evening, at the stopover.
During his trip, Eugène Delacroix observed, drew, noted everything he saw as evidenced by his travel diaries, sketches, sketches in which he approached as many subjects as those of nature, animals, Moorish architecture. He also collected a large number of objects, clothing, weapons and musical instruments.
While the envoy of the King of France Louis-Philippe continued his negotiations with the Sultan and the Moroccan dignitaries, Delacroix took the opportunity to stroll through the alleys of Meknes to discover a Mediterranean Orient that he confronted with the Orient. dreamed and imagined.
The fascination that Morocco exerted on him, he had already expressed it by saying: “it is a place made for painters… beauty abounds there… beauty runs the streets… I am stunned by everything I 've seen… I'm like a dreaming man right now”. By these sensations and these feelings, Eugène Delacroix thus reported, in his travel diaries, observations and testimonies accompanied by drawings and sketches on Morocco, its culture and on the ordinary, but oh so colorful life of its people.
On his return to France, and until his death in August 1863, the artist never ceased to use through his compositions the images brought back from his trip, thus cultivating a certain nostalgia. He painted more than sixty paintings inspired by Morocco.
