Nobody warns you that moving to Mexico comes with an unexpected life partner:

OXXO.

You walk in for a bottle of water and somehow leave having paid your phone bill, recharged your cellphone plan, grabbed an iced coffee, deposited cash, and solved three adult problems before breakfast.

At this point, I’m convinced OXXO is less of a convenience store and more of a public utility.

Need directions? “It’s next to the OXXO.”

Need another OXXO? There’s probably one across the street from that OXXO.

Need an emergency snack, coffee, charger, SIM card, bill payment, or random life solution? You already know where you’re going.

The longer you live in Mexico, the more you realize that OXXO isn’t part of daily life…

It is daily life. 😂

And if anyone from OXXO is watching this, I’ve been providing free marketing for years now. Maybe it’s time we made this relationship official. 🤝☕️

One of the most interesting debates in expat Facebook groups is noise.

Every few weeks someone posts about fireworks, loud music, parties, church bells, roosters, street vendors, construction, or neighborhood celebrations, and the comments immediately split into two camps.

“Respect the local culture.”

“People have a right to peace and quiet.”

I think both sides are missing something.

Moving to another country doesn’t mean you lose the right to be bothered by things. But it also doesn’t mean the place should change to match the expectations you brought with you.

Sometimes noise is a legitimate quality-of-life issue.

Sometimes it’s simply life happening around you.

The tricky part is figuring out which one you’re dealing with.

A lot of people move to Mexico because they love how alive it feels. The family gatherings. The celebrations. The sense of community. The feeling that people actually live outside their homes.

But community is rarely silent.

People often ask me what the biggest cultural difference is between Mexico and where they come from.

One of the biggest surprises for many foreigners is realizing that everyday life here is… everyday life.

People go to work, complain about traffic, stress about bills, take their kids to school, and argue about what to have for dinner.

That’s not to say safety isn’t important. Every country has places where you should be informed and use common sense.

But if your entire understanding of Mexico comes from headlines, you’re only seeing a tiny piece of the picture.
