Every summer, the predictions start rolling in, and somehow it's always supposed to be the worst hurricane season yet. 😅
Thankfully, it's been a few years since we've had a major hurricane in Cabo, but if you're heading north for the summer, now is a good time to make sure your home is ready just in case.
A few things I always recommend homeowners check before they leave:
✔️ Test your hurricane shutters — like do they really latch and shut easily? Or do they need some TLC.
✔️ Make sure your roof drains, canales, and outdoor drains are clear and draining properly — not doing this is the quickest way to have leaking and flooding.
✔️ Have sandbags ready.
✔️ Confirm your property manager's hurricane plan and when they'll check on the home before and AFTER a storm.
✔️ Secure outdoor furniture, umbrellas, décor, planters, and anything else that could become airborne in high winds.
✔️ Bring inside anything valuable, like outdoor TVs, fans, rugs, cushions, artwork, and electronics.
✔️ Unplug electronics and turn off appliances that could be damaged by power surges, including water heaters and non-essential electronics.
✔️ Donate anything perishable in the fridge and freezer before you leave — coming home to frozen rotten fish in the freezer is NOT fun (speaking from experience)
✔️ If you have a pool, lower your water level to prevent overflow — a lot of the flooding I’ve seen is from ground level pool overflow.
✔️ If you have solar panels, batteries, or a generator, make sure everything has been serviced and inspected — make sure you have a protocal for your solar batteries to switch off when they run out of charge, or else you’ll burn them out.
✔️ If you keep a vehicle, ATV, boat, or golf cart at your property, have a plan for where it will be stored and verify your insurance coverage is current.
✔️ Leave a key with a trusted friend or neighbor in case they can get to the property before your property manager — in a major hurricane, it could be a while.
✔️ Take photos and a video walkthrough before you leave for insurance purposes.
✔️ Photograph serial numbers for expensive items like TVs, Art, appliances, electronics, golf carts, generators, and other valuables. You'll be glad you have them if you ever need to file an insurance claim.
One thing a lot of people forget: make sure your insurance information, emergency contacts, HOA contacts, and important documents are easy to access here in Cabo and with you if something does happen.
