🔵 The Tulum water is blue because the water absorbs colors in the red part of the light spectrum, where it leaves behind colors in the blue part of the light spectrum for us to see. The water may also take on other colors like red and green.

☀️ The absorbed light comes from the sun and is made up of a variety of colors; blue is a color that has been difficult for nature to absorb. This difficulty explains why there are not many things in nature that are naturally blue, at least when compared to organisms that are green or other popular colors.

🌊 The deeper a water body becomes, the less light is able to access all of it, and therefore the water produces a darker shade of blue.

🪸 The shade of the sand and coral:
These entities reside at the bottom of the ocean; they play a part in the overall color of the sea when sunlight reaches them. Sand and coral with lighter shades in terms of color will give a light blue shade, while darker shades will produce the opposite consequence.

🏖 You may notice that different areas within the Caribbean have different shades of blue within them. This is because they have differing currents. The current causes various things to occur within the water, such as the resuspension of sand. These currents produce differing results and can create a variety of shades of the color blue.

🥇The color of the Tulum ocean is especially beautiful, and this claim can be supported by the fact that it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.

🌱 Sian Kaʼan Biosphere Reserve (Spanish: Reserva de la Biósfera de Sian Kaʼan) is a biosphere reserve in the municipality of Tulum in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It was established in 1986 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

🏝“Sian Ka’an” means “gate of heaven” or “a place where heaven begins”.

🐠The eight protected natural areas include the reefs of Banco Chinchorro, and Xcalak at South of Quintana Roo, Sian Kaʼan Biosphere Reserve, Cancun, the island of Cozumel that is located in front of Xcaret and Contoy Island up North, covering 780,000 acres (3,200 km2).
These areas lie in parts of all seven Caribbean Sea coastal municipalities of the state, with the largest part being in eastern Felipe Carrillo Puerto Municipality, where the vast majority of Sian Kaʼan Biosphere Reserve lies.

🪸Part of the reserve is on land and part is in the Caribbean Sea, including a section of coral reef. The reserve has an area of 5,280 km2.

💡The reserve also includes some 23 known archaeological sites of the Maya civilization including Muyil. Remains of the Decauville railway Vigía Chico-Santa Cruz, which was operated from 1905 to 1932, can be found at several places.

♻️Within the Amigos de Sian Kaʼan project objectives are the identification, protection and management of additional areas with high biodiversity value as well as those critical for maintenance of the life cycles of endangered, threatened and migratory species in the Riviera Maya and providing environmental education through books, journals and pamphlets and giving technical assistance and training to Mayan communities working with ecotourism.

💡 The Cobá Archaeological Zone houses the remnants of an ancient Mayan city, a time-worn ensemble of pyramids, monuments, and causeways submerged in a steamy Mexican jungle. Situated deep in the Yucatán Peninsula, about 40 minutes inland from Tulum, the site receives relatively few visitors – a must for archaeology buffs yearning to escape the crowds.

💡 The big-ticket attraction is Ixmoja (also known as just Nohoch Mul). Stretching some 42 metres into the sky, it’s one of the tallest pyramids in the entire Yucatán Peninsula. About 120 steep stone brick stairs lie between the base and peak.

💡 From the top of the pyramid, you’ll catch a glimpse of Laguna Cobá and Laguna Macanxoc. Both of these freshwater lagoons have been a crucial water source in Cobá, both in the past and today.

💡 The sacbeob are pre-Columbian limestone walkways connecting key residences, temples, and water sources. Historians believe the Mayans travelled in the cool of night and built them from white limestone to reflect the moonlight. Sixteen sacbeob are open to the public today.
💡 Around Cobá, you’ll also encounter several stelaes, which are stone slab monuments engraved with mysterious glyphs.

🪙 You’re probably wondering how to open a bank account in Mexico if you plan on living and paying bills there. Navigating the banking system in Mexico is pretty straightforward, like in the U.S.
Most banks have the same requirements, but it’s wise to check with your desired bank for a detailed list of documents you’ll need to bring.

Here’s what you’ll need to open an account at most Mexican banks:

Temporary or Permanent Resident Card
RFC
Passport
Proof of address (utility bill or internet bill with your name on it)
at least MXN 1,000 (yes, it needs to be in pesos.)
Translator (most banks only have paperwork in Spanish.)

💡 Some banks may have an English speaking banker who can help translate some of the paperwork. However, I wouldn’t count on this. Come prepared to understand the paperwork you have to fill out.

💳 Once you open your bank account, you’ll most likely be given a debit card on the spot. Ask your banker to provide you with details on how many withdrawals you can make without penalties. Make sure they explain what fees there are for withdrawals (if any) and how you can change your pin.

💡 TULUM ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE

🏰 El Castillo

El Castillo (the Castle) is Tulum’s main pyramid, and was used as an ancient lighthouse. Two small windows at the top allowed sailors to navigate the bay at dusk.

If merchant boat captains could see daylight through both windows as they sailed in, they wouldn’t crash into the reef hiding just below the water.

🎨 Temple Of The Frescoes

The Temple of the Frescoes, located in front of El Castillo, is the best preserved building at the site. Peer inside to see an actual mural with colored paint still intact!

🏛 House Of The Columns

The House of the Columns is a large, complex building with 4 rooms and a series of large columns for holding up the roof.

⭐️ House Of The Halach Uinic

Each Mayan city was ruled by a halach uinic who served as high-priest. The House of the Halach Uinic in Tulum is also well preserved.
