Nobody agrees where the name came from. District records say “Slim” is the English word for narrow. The older story says a British captain went looking for the Perak River, took this one by mistake, and left his name on it. Either way, it stuck.

Before the expressway, every vehicle heading north came down this main street. Then the highway went around and took the traffic with it — leaving a town that never had to change to suit anyone.

On 7 January 1942, the Japanese advance broke through here against the 11th Indian Division, in one of the decisive engagements of the Malayan Campaign.
