WHY YOU SHOULD ADD PILLARS (COLUMNS) TO THE EDGES OF YOUR BUILDING
Many people think pillars, also called columns, are just for big buildings or upstairs projects, but the truth is that even a simple bungalow benefits a lot from having columns at key positions, especially the edges and corners of the building.
Pillars are vertical reinforced concrete members designed to carry and transfer loads from the roof and beams down to the foundation. By adding them to the edges of your structure, you create extra strength where walls meet and where structural stress is highest. These corner areas often face wind pressure, roof load, and settlement forces. Without proper columns, cracks can easily develop at these weak points over time.
Columns also help to hold the lintel and roof weight, keeping your block walls from carrying too much pressure. This means your building will resist bending, shifting, and sagging, especially in areas with soft soil or heavy rainfall.
When adding pillars, your engineer will specify the right reinforcement bars (rods), column size, and concrete mix to ensure proper load transfer. Columns should be properly tied to the foundation and well cured to gain full strength.
If you are planning to build, donβt cut corners. Whether itβs a bungalow, duplex, or even a shop, adding edge columns gives your building durability, beauty, and long-term safety. Itβs a small investment that protects your entire structure for decades.
