SALVATION IS FREE
By Jonathan O. Ubah
One of the greatest truths in the Christian faith is this: salvation is free, but it is not cheap. It is offered freely to everyone, yet it cost God the life of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.
Many people spend their lives trying to earn God's acceptance through good works, religious activities, charitable giving, or moral living. While these are commendable, none of them can purchase salvation. Eternal life is not a reward for human effort; it is a gift of God's grace.
The Bible declares:
«"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast."
— Ephesians 2:8–9 (NKJV)»
Notice the word gift. A gift cannot be earned; it can only be received. If salvation could be bought, the wealthy would have an advantage. If it could be earned, only the strongest would obtain it. But God made salvation available to all—rich or poor, educated or uneducated, young or old—through faith in Jesus Christ.
Jesus paid the full price on the cross when He declared:
«"It is finished!"
— John 19:30»
Those three words changed the destiny of humanity forever. The debt of sin was paid in full. There is nothing left for mankind to add to the sacrifice of Christ.
The Apostle Paul also reminds us:
«"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
— Romans 6:23»
Sin pays wages, but God gives a gift. Wages are earned; gifts are received. Salvation is God's gracious invitation to every sinner who will repent and believe in His Son.
However, while salvation is free, following Christ demands commitment. Jesus calls us to deny ourselves, take up our cross daily, and follow Him (Luke 9:23). We are not saved by good works, but once we are saved, good works become the evidence of a transformed life.
God's invitation remains open today:
«"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
— Matthew 11:28»
No matter how far you have wandered or how heavy your past may be, God's grace is greater than your failures. You do not have to clean yourself up before coming to Christ. Come as you are, and He will transform you from the inside out.
Salvation is free because Jesus has already paid the price. The only question that remains is: Have you received His gift?
Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your heart. Receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, and experience the joy, peace, forgiveness, and eternal life that only He can give.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the priceless gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. I acknowledge that I cannot save myself. Today, I place my faith in Jesus alone. Forgive my sins, cleanse my heart, and make me a new creation. Help me to live for Your glory all the days of my life. In Jesus' name. Amen.
