THE WORDS WE LEAVE BEHIND
EPISODE 1: THE QUARREL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
In a crowded public compound, many families
lived together like one big family. Children
played together in the open yard, women
cooked outside their rooms, and neighbors
often shared food and stories.
Among the residents were two women.
One was Mama Chidinma, a widow blessed
with three children—two daughters and a son
named Emeka. Her children were her pride and
joy.
Though life was not easy, she worked hard
every day to provide for them.
The second woman was Madam Becky, a quiet
woman from the Middle Belt. She had lived in the compound for several years.
She was kind to the children and often helped her neighbors whenever they needed assistance.
However, there was one pain she carried in her heart.
She had no child of her own.
Every day she watched mothers holding their
children, laughing with them, and preparing them for school. Though she smiled outwardly, deep inside she wished she could experience the same joy.
One afternoon, a misunderstanding arose
between the two women over a domestic issue.
What started as a simple argument quickly
turned into a heated quarrel.
Neighbors gathered as the women exchanged harsh words.
In the heat of anger, Mama Chidinma mocked Madam Becky's childlessness.
The words struck like a knife.
The entire compound became silent.
Madam Becky's eyes filled with tears, but she refused to cry in public.
Instead, she looked directly at Mama Chidinma and said slowly,
"You have insulted me today before everyone. I will do something to you that you will never forget for the rest of your life."
The neighbors immediately stepped in and separated them.
Later that evening, elders in the compound settled the matter.
Both women appeared to apologize.
People believed peace had returned.
But while Mama Chidinma forgot the quarrel, Madam Becky never forgot the pain.
Every night she replayed those insulting words in her mind.
And slowly, a dangerous thought began to grow inside her heart.
