The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has directed the Nigeria Immigration Service to withdraw and deactivate passports of Nigerians who have officially renounced their citizenship.

The directive applies to individuals whose renunciation has been approved by the President, in line with the 1999 Constitution.

Tunji-Ojo said once citizenship is renounced, such individuals can no longer hold Nigerian passports or any sovereign document.

He added that the move is part of efforts to tighten identity controls and stop former citizens from travelling with Nigerian passports after their status has changed.
