Anambra Police Recover AK-47 Rifle Hidden in Residential Apartment

Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have recovered an AK-47 rifle hidden on the rooftop of a house under renovation in Igboukwu, Aguata Local Government Area.

The discovery, made around 12:30 p.m. on Friday, July 11, 2025, followed credible intelligence provided by residents of Ihuowele Ngo village, according to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the weapon may be linked to a notorious individual named Samson, believed to be the former occupant of the building. Samson, who has reportedly been on the run since June 2024, is currently being tracked by police authorities.

Commending the residents for their vigilance, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, praised the growing synergy between the police and communities. He urged the public to continue sharing timely and useful information to help law enforcement protect lives and property.

This latest recovery comes just days after an AK-47 rifle allegedly used during a gun battle between suspected gunmen and a Police-led Joint Task Force (JTF) was retrieved near the Oko-Ekwulobia flyover, also in Aguata LGA.

Police Launch Manhunt After 13 Killed in Anambra Community

The Anambra State Police Command has begun a thorough investigation into the killing of at least 13 people — reportedly from Ebonyi State — by unidentified gunmen in Ogboji, a community in Orumba South Local Government Area of the state.

According to information gathered by our correspondent, heavily armed men stormed the community on Monday evening, arriving in two SUVs. Without provocation, they opened fire on a gathering of residents who were holding their monthly general meeting. Witnesses also reported that the attackers fired sporadically into the air, creating widespread fear and confusion.

The violence has since thrown the entire community into chaos, halting daily economic and social activities. Community leaders and locals remain in shock over the incident.

The president of the Association of Non-Indigenes in Anambra State, Prince Chigozie Nweke, disclosed the attack in a statement issued to journalists on Tuesday. While local sources claim 13 people were killed, police reports so far confirm 10 fatalities.

Nweke noted that the victims were mainly non-indigenes, believed to be natives of Ebonyi State, and called on the state government and security agencies to intensify efforts to uncover those behind the violence.

He said, “It was a black Monday for the people of Ogboji, particularly the Ebonyi community. Armed men stormed a peaceful meeting and murdered around 13 persons in cold blood. We urge the Anambra State Government and relevant authorities to investigate this tragedy and bring the killers to justice.”

He also appealed directly to the state Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, to mobilise officers and ensure that those responsible are apprehended swiftly.

One of the survivors, Augustine Odom — chairman of the Ebonyi community in Ogboji — described the incident as shocking and without warning.

Odom recounted, “We were in the middle of our usual monthly meeting, held on the last Monday of every month, when the attackers came. They drove in a Sienna van and accused us of planning something against them. They demanded our minutes book, took it, and then ordered everyone to lie down before opening fire. Thirteen of us died instantly. I and the treasurer survived, though we were both shot.”

He added that the deceased hailed from several towns in Ebonyi State, including Izzi, Ikwo, and Mgbo.

Both Odom and the treasurer, who are currently receiving treatment in a nearby hospital, said they had no known conflicts with any group or individuals and were simply trying to support one another as non-indigenes living in the area.

When contacted, the Anambra State Police Command’s spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident. He stated that security operatives had secured the area and that an investigation was already underway.

Ikenga said, “We can confirm a violent shooting that led to the deaths of ten individuals in Ogboji on the evening of June 30, 2025. The police condemn this barbaric act and assure the public that the perpetrators will be tracked down and brought to book.”

He added that the victims were rushed to a nearby hospital, where ten were confirmed dead, and their remains have since been deposited at the morgue. The police are working with leads and further updates will be shared in due course.

Police Inspector Shot Dead in Clash With DSS Operatives in Anambra State

A police inspector from the 29 Police Mobile Force in Awka has been killed during a clash with DSS operatives in Uli, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The incident happened around yesterday in the evening, during a stop-and-search operation along the Onitsha/Owerri Expressway, near Danaks Filling Station.

According to reports, the police stopped a Toyota Sienna driving on the wrong lane, not knowing it belonged to DSS officials. The DSS operatives reportedly resisted the search and opened fire, hitting Inspector Bello Abdullah. He was rushed to Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital in Nnewi but was confirmed dead on arrival. The DSS officers fled the scene after the shooting.

Our collective descent into lawlessness has reached a disgraceful and terrifying new low.

On Saturday, around 7:30PM, Hon. Justice E.G. Umokoro of the Bayelsa State High Court, Yenagoa, was abducted at gunpoint in front of Kilimanjaro Eateries, along the Ekeki axis of the state capital.

Pause and let that sink in: a sitting High Court Judge - a custodian of justice and a symbol of the rule of law - was brazenly snatched from the street like a petty target by gun-wielding criminals dressed in camouflage. The very uniform meant to represent authority and security has now become a cover for terror.

This is no ordinary crime. It is a direct, blasphemous assault on the judiciary - one of the last fragile pillars still holding up our battered republic. Only a few months ago, legal practitioners were gruesomely murdered in Anambra and Benue States. Their killers still walk free. Now, the criminal enterprise has escalated. They no longer just kill in the shadows - they abduct justice in broad daylight.

If judges are no longer safe in Nigeria, who then is?

When those tasked with upholding the Constitution are hunted by the lawless, what hope is left for the ordinary citizen?

What makes this even more chilling is the calculated deception - the use of camouflage uniforms to project false legitimacy. This not only delayed intervention but also completely betrayed public trust. By the time the ruse was uncovered, a High Court Judge had been whisked away - in a state capital, no less - with impunity.

We must now confront a sobering truth: Camouflage is no longer a symbol of protection - it has become the perfect disguise for predators. It must be regulated with urgency. Police officers deployed to civilian spaces must be barred from wearing camouflage. That uniform has been hijacked - weaponized by criminals who now blend seamlessly into our communities, manipulating fear and eroding public vigilance.

Across Nigeria, insecurity festers - from our highways to homes, from farmlands to courtrooms. Criminals grow bolder. Security agencies appear overwhelmed. And the moral authority of the Nigerian state continues to bleed out, slowly but surely.

We cannot afford silence.

The abduction of Hon. Justice E.G. Umokoro is not just another kidnapping - it is a violent blow to the very heart of our democracy. It is a loud, chilling indictment of our security architecture and the government’s capacity to protect its most sacred institutions.

I call on all security agencies - the Police, DSS, Military, NSCDC - to break protocol, collapse silos, and act with unified urgency and uncompromising resolve to secure the immediate and unconditional release of Hon. Justice Umokoro.

Anything less emboldens the enemies of our nation and confirms the collapse of public order.

Enough is enough.

The judiciary must be protected. Our streets must be reclaimed. Camouflage must no longer be a mask for mayhem.

Justice is under siege. And when justice is shackled, none of us is free.

Flavour N'abenia For Solution Fun City Opening As ANSEC Awards Contract To Build Rehabilitation Centre, Reiterates Commitment To Anambra Rebirth Programme

Several important decisions were made at the 12th meeting of the year of the Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC), which took place on June 23, 2025, at the Light House, Awka. These decisions included:

Top Nigerian Music Icon, Flavour to Lead Solution Fun City Opening

The Council has fixed Saturday, 28th of June, 2025, as the day to open the Solution Fun City to the public and approved a foremost Anambra State-born Nigerian music icon, Chinedu Okoli, better known by his stage name, Flavour N'abania or simply Flavour, to lead a band of other notable musicians such as Umu-Obiligbo and others to the grand fiesta. The event is open to members of the public who wish to attend.

Rehabilitation Centre to be Built

The Council decided to build a rehabilitation centre at Nibo, Awka Capital Territory, to address the state's mental health issues. This will allow those who leave the state's asylums to access rehabilitation facilities that provide all the services they need to fully heal before returning to their families and communities.

Government's Commitment to Anambra Rebirth Programme Reiterated

The Council also further reflected on the proposed Anambra Rebirth Programme and determined that the programme's blueprint should address a number of important issues to achieve its main objectives, such as the restoration of the Igbo Apprenticeship system (Igba Boi), the return to hard work and integrity, the criminalisation of obscenities, especially the flaunting of money, and warped ideologies of wealth without work.

Projects

The Council also considered and approved several contract awards, including:

1. A contract award of N417,319,619.85 to Triseconds Resources Ltd for the construction and modelling of the State Rehabilitation Centre at Nibo, Awka Capital Territory.
2. A contract award of N72,598,200.88 to Achufusi Ventures for the relocation and expansion of the Solution Hub & Park at Aroma Junction, Awka.
3. A contract award of N414,907,757.85 to Navigator Sign Ltd for the construction of an increte walkway and flooring, installation of kerbs, and aesthetic enhancement of the Ekwulobia Flyover.
4. A payment of N340,936,079.62 to Hemebs Construction Ltd for additional works and fluctuations on the construction of a six-hall high court building complex.
5. A payment of N790,241,598.42 to O Ben Developers Ltd for additional works and fluctuations on the construction of 17 unit dwellings (duplexes) and ancillary facilities at the new Commissioners’ Quarters, Awka.
6. A payment of N62,867,234.16 to B & O Ltd for rate fluctuations on the construction of additional perimeter fencing, stormwater drainage culverts, and chain-like fences at the Safari Park, Agulu Lake.
