*7 GOLDEN RULES FOR SUCCESSFUL CATFISH FARMING* 🐟

If you want to win in catfish business, keep these 7 things:

*1. DON’T FARM ALONE - NETWORK*
Nobody knows everything. Even me, I’m still learning.
Business isn’t about what YOU know alone. It’s about WHO you know.
Build relationships with experienced farmers, feed sellers, vets, buyers. One phone call can save you ₩500k loss.

*2. DON’T TRUST EXPERIENCE ONLY - RESEARCH TOO*
Experience is gold, but combine it with research.
What worked for me in Lagos may fail for you in Ilorin due to water, climate, feed.
Read, ask questions, attend training. Book + experience = profit.

*3. STOP OVERFEEDING - FEED SMART*
This is #1 mistake of new farmers. More feed ≠ more fish.
*How to feed right:*
- Feed 2x daily only: Morning + Evening
- Use point feeding: Throw feed in 1-2 spots, don’t scatter
- Be patient: Let them finish before adding more
- Size matters: Don’t give feed bigger than fish mouth. Match pellet size to fish size

*4. AVOID OVERSTOCKING - GIVE THEM SPACE*
Too many fish = 3 problems:
1. *Stunted growth*: They’ll fight for food. Some grow, some remain fingerlings
2. *Cannibalism*: Big fish will eat small ones. You’ll count losses daily
3. *Disease outbreak*: Dirty water + stress = disease. One sick fish can wipe whole pond

*5. DON’T RUSH TO SELL - TIMING IS MONEY*
Don’t sell because you’re tired or need cash urgently.
Catfish price changes with supply. When everyone is harvesting = price crashes.
When supply is low = price jumps. Plan your cycle so you harvest when market is dry. Do market research first.

*6. DON’T BE “TOO ECONOMICAL” - INVEST WISELY*
Cutting cost on quality feed, good fingerlings, or aerator is not savings. It’s loss.
Cheap feed = slow growth = more feed cost + time.
Buy quality once, cry once. Buy cheap feed, cry every month.

*7. NEVER ASSUME - ASK QUESTIONS*
See something strange in pond? Fish gasping? Water changing color? Don’t say “maybe it will pass”.
Ask fellow farmers. Ask your feed supplier. Ask vet.

How to make your catfish grows bigger and faster.

Maintain ideal water parameters: Aim for a pH range of 6.5-7.5, temperature between 23-29°c, and sufficient dissolved oxygen levels (5-8 mg/L).

Regularly monitor and adjust these parameters as needed.

Perform regular water changes: Replace 10-20% of the pond water at most every 2 days with fresh water to remove waste products and maintain water quality.

Control ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels: Keep these within safe limits (ammonia and nitrite below 0.5 ppm, nitrate below 50 ppm) through regular testing and water changes.

Choose a high-quality catfish feed: Opt for feed formulated feeds with high crude protein specifically designed for your catfish and life stage. These feeds provide a balanced blend of nutrients essential for growth.

Feed consistently: Establish a regular feeding schedule and stick to it. Avoid overfeeding, as this can pollute the water.

Consider supplementary feeding: Offer occasional treats like live worms like mealworms or maggots or Black Soldier fly larva, or chicken intestines or vegetables to provide variety and additional nutrients.

Prevent overcrowding: Stock your pond with the appropriate number of catfish based on its size and carrying capacity.

Overcrowding can stress fish and hinder growth.

Manage predators: Control populations of predators like birds, turtles, alligators, snakes or larger fish that might prey on your catfish.

Regularly monitor for signs of disease or parasites and take necessary actions to address them promptly.

Sort fish regularly to prevent cannibalism.

Sizes of catfish feeds and stages of fish to feed them with.

The appropriate feed sizes for catfish vary depending on their growth stages, as their nutritional requirements and feeding capabilities change over time.

Feed fries of 4 days old to 1 week 0.2 mm.

Feed 0.3mm - 0.5mm feed two weeks after hatchery.

Feed Ijebu of 3 weeks 0.8mm feed

Fingerlings (3 to 4 grams): At this stage, catfish require a high-protein diet for rapid growth and development. Feed them with foreign feed of 0.8mm feed size, ensuring that the feed particles are small enough for them to consume easily.

Post-fingerlings (4 – 6 grams): As catfish continue to grow, their feeding habits change, and they can handle slightly larger feed particles. A feed size of 1.2mm or 1.5mm feed is suitable for this stage.

Juvenile (6 – 10 grams): Catfish at the juvenile stage have increased dietary requirements, particularly for protein and essential amino acids. Feed them with a 1.5mm feed or 1.8mm feed size, ensuring that the feed is of high quality to support their growth.

Post-juvenile (10 – 50 grams): During this stage, catfish undergo significant growth, and their dietary needs evolve. A 2mm feed size is still appropriate, but it's crucial to monitor their feeding behavior and adjust the feed size.

Adult 50 grams and above. Feed them with a 3mm or 4mm, depending on their response to feed and their body size and ensure that the feed provides balanced nutrition for growth maintenance, reproduction, and overall health.

450 grams melaunche - 1kg and above can be feed 6mm.

Remember to always observe your catfish's feeding behavior and adjust the feed sizes and formulations as needed. Regular change of water is also very Paramount, dirty water reduces feed consumption, and causes stunted growth, check water pH once u notice fish floating on surface gasping for air, check pond regularly,
