The first COVID-19 (Coronavirus) patient was identified in Nigeria just a few days back. However, now more than ever before, it is our individual and collective duty to protect ourselves, stay safe, avoid spreading unnecessary panic and instead spread facts and helpful information.
For starters, most people who become infected experience mild illness and recover. There has been only a fatality rate of less than 2% of everyone infected.
Here are some ways the World Health Organization (WHO) has advised you can protect yourself as well as others.
1. Regularly and thoroughly wash your hands or clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. Also, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with hands that have not been washed or cleaned.
2. Maintain social distancing, of at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
3. Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.
4. Cook meat and eggs thoroughly before eating. Avoid buying meat and eggs from sources that are not clean or do not observe hygienic practices.
5. Avoid unprotected contact with wild animals. Do not touch or be in close contact with wild animals or even domesticated animals whose origin you do not know.
6. If you become ill with high temperatures, headaches and runny nose, please stay at home and- where possible, self-isolate. If you begin to cough, have difficulty breathing, or the fever persists, seek medical care immediately.
Most importantly, stay informed on the latest development and follow advice given by your healthcare provider, your national and local public health authority who have the most up-to-date information and safety measures.
Stay Safe.
