The Maiduguri Flood of 2024: A Disaster We Must Not Forget
On 10 September 2024, Maiduguri experienced one of the most devastating floods in its recent history.
Heavy rainfall in August and September caused excessive inflow into the Alau Dam in Konduga Local Government Area. The water exceeded the dam's capacity, causing a section of the dam to collapse and sending floodwater into Maiduguri and surrounding areas.
UNICEF reported that about 40% of Maiduguri was flooded during the disaster.
The impact was enormous.
According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA):
• 414,176 people were affected across nine LGAs
• 389,267 people were displaced
• 37 deaths were reported
• 7,155 houses were damaged
• 737 hectares of farmland were damaged
The flooding also damaged roads, bridges, schools, healthcare facilities, markets and other critical infrastructure.
Among the areas reported as affected were Shehuri, parts of GRA, Gambomi, Budum, Bulabulin, Adamkolo, Millionaires Quarters, Monday Market and Gwange.
This was more than a flood.
For thousands of families, it meant losing homes, businesses, belongings and sources of livelihood within hours.
Maiduguri has shown remarkable resilience since then, but the lesson remains important: when it comes to property, location is not only about convenience, price or beauty.
