Do you know that before distributing inheritance, there are three major rights that must be fulfilled? These are acronymized as FEWD:
FE– Funeral expenses
W – Wasiyyah, a valid will (bequest)
D – Debts

F – Funeral Expenses:
These include the costs of the burial, shroud (kafan), washing (ghusl), transportation, and other necessary arrangements related to the funeral. According to Islamic law, these expenses should ideally be covered from the estate of the deceased before any other rights are fulfilled.

However, in practice, family members or well-wishers often volunteer to cover the funeral costs out of love, respect, or urgency—especially when access to the estate is delayed. While this act is commendable and may be rewarded by Allāh, it doesn't cancel the fact that such expenses remain a liability on the estate.

W – Wasiyyah: Ex*****on of a Valid Will (Bequest): If the deceased made a will (not exceeding one-third of the estate and not for heirs), it should be carried out.

D – Debts: Any outstanding debts owed by the deceased must be paid in full.

In Islamic inheritance (al-Farā’iḍ), the fixed shares (al-furūḍ al-muqaddarah) are specific portions of an estate divinely assigned by Allah in the Qur’an. These shares are not open to interpretation or opinion (ijtihād); rather, they are clearly outlined in Surah An-Nisā’ (4:11–12, 176). The fixed shares include:

½, ¼, ⅛, ⅔, ⅓, and 1/6.

They are also known as Qur’anic shares or specified shares, and they are granted to particular heirs under specific conditions—which we will explain in detail later.

The science of inheritance is a knowledge without counterpart,
Sufficing you, for Allah Himself has undertaken the division.

He has clarified the shares clearly for each heir,
As He, the Most High, said: *"Allah instructs you..."*

And regarding *kalalah*, the divine ruling was revealed,
Thus, the honor of what Allah decreed became evident.
