Stop oppressing the Widows and their daughters. The same right you have as a man to the estate of your father is the same right the female children also have.
Daughters Are Not Spare Parts. Widows Are Not Strangers to her husband's Estate in Nigeria.
Episode 1.
Chibuzo and Ekene were not just brothers — they were umunna, sons of the same father, raised under the same roof in Amaenyi, Awka.
Their father, late Chief Okanumee Udenka, did what many would call wisdom:
He shared his property among his children before he passed on.
No confusion.
No fight.
Everything was settled.
Or so everyone thought.
Life took a cruel turn.
Chibuzo, the first son, died suddenly in a ghastly motor accident.
A man who left behind a wife… and only daughters.
Before the tears could even dry, something darker began to unfold.
Ekene — his own younger brother — didn’t just mourn.
He calculated.
In hushed meetings with some kindred members, Ekene raised a familiar argument:
“Under our native law and custom, daughters do not inherit their father’s property. The wife too has no claim. Let her hand everything over.”
Suddenly, culture became a weapon.
Tradition became a tool for oppression.
And grief became a battlefield.
Imagine being Chibuzo’s wife…
You just lost your husband.
Your daughters just lost their father.
And instead of support, you’re told:
“Pack up. Hand over everything. You have no right here.”
No time to grieve.
No shoulder to lean on.
Only pressure.
But here’s where reality meets the law.
Many people still believe that once “custom” is mentioned, the conversation ends.
It doesn’t.
Courts in Nigeria have repeatedly rejected customs that discriminate against female children.
The idea that daughters cannot inherit simply because they are female is no longer standing on solid legal ground.
So when Ekene says:
“Female children do not inherit.”
He’s not just relying on tradition — he’s standing on shaky legal ground.
This is no longer just a family issue.
It’s about:
Widowhood rights
Daughters’ inheritance rights
The misuse of culture to silence the vulnerable
And so, Chibuzo’s wife did the only thing she could:
She ran to a lawyer.
Not because she wanted a fight…
But because she wanted justice.
The real question is:
When tradition clashes with fairness,
When family becomes hostile,
When grief is exploited…
👉 Will you stay silent?
👉 Or will you stand your ground.
