The Struggle for Fair Metering: My Personal Experience of IBEDC Unjustifiable Electricity Debt

In August 2024, I moved into a new apartment - a compound that has 2 buildimg, eager to settle into my new space. However, what followed is a journey I never envisioned – a fight against unjust electricity billing and mounting debt that seemed to have no explanation.

While waiting for a prepaid meter to be installed, I was sharing power with my neighboring recharging their prepared meter in turns. So eventually, my prepaid meter arrived. To my shock, a hefty debt of ₦167,332.90 hsd been accumulated to it which led to my unit token dropping drastically from 4.44 to 1.55 for a recharge of #1,000. This implies a deduction for an unexplainable debt I never consummate.

My frustration grew when, after visiting the IBEDC business hub in Sango Ota, Ogun State, I discovered that the debt had risen to over ₦200,000. So, I left the office feeling angry and unheard. Determined not to let it slide, I reached out to IBEDC via email, copied NERC (the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission), and filed a complaint on the FCCPC (Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission) website.

While I waited for a response, I was met with silence. But just when I thought my voice had been lost, I received a reply from FCCPC on the 29th of January, signaling a glimpse of hope.

This experience has not just been a personal inconvenience, but a reminder of how many Nigerians struggle with unclear and Unjustifiable billing systems in essential services like electricity. It’s time for more transparency and accountability in the sector.

So, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), I call on you to look critically into this mater and do the needful.

I know that many Nigerians face this same struggle as this is evident in the media below.

So, I call on every well meaning individuals who is or knows one who is facing this same menace to lend their voices and let this post get to every necessary quarter it should get to as I believe that our collective voices can lead to real change.

Yours in fight for Fair Metering and billing,

Moses Willoughby.

If you struggle to craft compelling subject lines, read this

As I open each email I received from different newsletters

I wonder what makes each of its SL/HL compelling that would warrant opening

This led me to making research and I stumbled on Joseph Sugarman's copywriting handbook - a summary

Let's digress a bit

See, in whatever copywriting niche you chose to serve

Your subjectline/headline is vital

It's what determines whether or not your content gets read and what happens next

So don't joke with it

Okay, back to our discussion

Sugarman proposed 10 types of headlines, which are:

1. Direct Headlines: Straightforward, factual headlines that clearly communicate the benefit.

2. Indirect Headlines: Pique curiosity without revealing the benefit.

3. News Headlines: These create urgency and importance

4. Question Headlines: Engage readers by asking a question.

5. Command Headlines: Direct the reader to take action.

6. Reason-Why Headlines: Explain the benefits and rationale.

7. Testimonial Headlines: Use customer success stories.

8. Problem-Solution Headlines: Identify a problem and offer a solution.

9. Guarantee Headlines: Offer assurance and reduce risk.

10. Emotional Headlines: Appeal to emotions rather than logic.

When I read all of these with examples, I begin to understand those emails' SLs that I read earlier

As much as you shouldn't toy with your SL is as much as you shouldn't get yourself all worked up crafting compelling subject lines

Crafting Subjectlines/Headlines is easier than you think

I will be expanding on each type with examples in next post, don't miss out

Let me drop my pen 🖊 here.

Do you know using misdirection headlines can be unethical?

Why because, as it may:

1. Mislead readers
2. Exploit emotions
3. Damage credibility

Ethical copywriting prioritizes transparency, honesty, and respect for the audience.

So in crafting your headlines, consider these guidelines:

1. Align headlines with content
2. Avoid deception or manipulation
3. Use clear, concise language
4. Respect readers' intelligence and emotions, and
5. Focus on benefits, value, and solutions

Instead of misdirection headlines, focus on crafting compelling, accurate headlines that:

1. Highlight benefits
2. Ask relevant questions
3. Make bold claims (showing evidence)
4. Create curiosity (leaving out deception)

Don't forget, ethical copywriting builds trust, credibility, and long-term relationships with your audience.

Hi Professionals,

So today I want to do a little of HEADLINE/CONTENT ANALYZING

I was just scrolling through facebook and came across the content in the pictures below

The headline is a direct opposite of what the content is

And I find this disturbing

Though, it cut my attention and I read through to the end

But then, I believe it's:

■ Reader misleading
■ Emotion exploiting, and
■ Credibility damaging

When crafting your content you must always put the readers first

This is because, if you don't you might end up loosing your credibility and this will hurt your brand and people will see you as untrustworthy and will not listen to you.

SO, BE ETHICAL IN YOUR CONTENT CRAFTING

Perfection kills, consistency thrives

Are you stuck at a point, feeling you ain't good enough?

That's because you focus more on being perfect

For some weeks now, I've been stuck, having this deep feeling of not good enough

The truth is when you chase perfection, it turns out to

◆ paralyse decision-making
◇ hinder creativity, and
◆ delay result

So, rather focus on consistency to:

◆ Build momentum
◇ Develop resilience, and
◆ Drive success

And now, I'm going all in to intensify on

◆ outreaching
◇ writing & researching, and
◆ posting

P.s: If you've ever felt this way before, let me know how you overcame in the comments
