An expansion joint is a deliberate gap introduced into a building structure to allow for movement without causing cracks or structural damage.
Buildings are not completely rigid, they expand, contract, settle, and move due to several factors.
Why Are Expansion Joints Necessary?
1. Temperature Changes: Concrete and steel expand when hot and contract when cold. In a place like Port Harcourt, heat variation and sun exposure can still cause noticeable movement.
2. Moisture Movement: Materials like concrete and blocks absorb moisture and expand slightly.
3. Settlement: Different parts of a building may settle at slightly different rates.
4. Seismic or Vibrational Movement: Though Nigeria is not highly seismic, minor ground vibrations and long-span structures still require consideration.
