We got a distress call sometime last year, the 11 bedrooms country-home triplex with a suspended swimming pool we designed for one of our clients had experienced a partial structural failure and subsequent collapse. He needed us to come in immediately and remedy the situation before he looses it to complete ruins.
We had earlier advised him to not use just anyone for the construction of the project because of the uniqueness of the design even if he couldn’t agree to our price, but unfortunately, that appeared to not be the case. He wanted it way cheaper than it could be but you know, sometimes, “cheap” & “quality” does not go hand-in-glove.
Either ways, in this case, it’s not our duty to judge bad decisions but to correct them and make sure it doesn’t happen again now that we are in the picture.
We are in motion. Few months down the line, we have done and still doing what needed to be done. Carried out structural integrity tests, detected places and cause of structural failure, proposed alternative architectural and structural designs to suit what we met on ground which showed a substantial deviation from initial proposed designs and today, that same structure is standing strong.
A take-away tip: If you want a cheap but functional home, get a qualified architect, let him help you start that process by coming with a cost effective design that suits your budget from the initial stages. But when you want it loud and different, understand that it comes with a cost implication that you must be willing to own up to.
Do not spend several millions buying building materials for your project construction and consider it foolish to spend a little more to employ the right professional to help you manage and secure that investment. That little extra you’re trying to save could eventually lead to you loosing them all.
