I've been in Ibadan for a while now, conducting market surveys and working diligently with my team at FindRoomy to create a system that effectively addresses the city's accommodation issues. But that's not the main reason I'm writing today.
Today, I set out on a personal quest: to find a tech hub in Ibadan. (I'll share the details of that adventure another time.) On my way back from Co-Host Hub, I witnessed something that struck me deeply.
As I walked down a busy street, I saw a kind stranger helping a blind man cross the road. Once safely across, the blind man described his house to the bike man with such vivid detail, it was as if he had seen the place before.
This encounter made me think: "What if this man wanted to find a new house? How can we make that process easier for him and others like him?"

NIGERIAN CITIES WITH THE MOST AFFORDABLE RENTED APARTMENTS

Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, has a diverse real estate market with varying rental costs. Here are five Nigerian cities with the most affordable rented apartments:

Owerri: The capital city of Imo State, Owerri is known for its relatively low cost of living. With numerous affordable neighborhoods, renting an apartment in Owerri is quite budget-friendly.

Ilorin: As the capital of Kwara State, Ilorin is another city where rental prices are considerably lower. With a serene environment and decent infrastructure, it's a suitable choice for those seeking affordability.

Abeokuta: The capital of Ogun State, Abeokuta is a historic city that offers affordable rental options. Its proximity to Lagos makes it an attractive option for people working in Lagos but seeking a lower cost of living.

Calabar: Known for its clean environment, Calabar is the capital of Cross River State. This city has a slower pace of life and offers affordable rental properties, making it an attractive option for those on a budget.

Jos: The capital city of Plateau State, Jos has a cool climate and relatively low rental prices. Its scenic landscapes and diverse cultural heritage make it a popular choice for affordable living.

While these cities may offer more affordable rental options, bear in mind that factors such as location, property size, and available amenities can greatly impact the cost of rented apartments. Always conduct thorough research and consider your personal preferences before making a decision.

Are you late on Rent?

Here are few tips to help you out

If you find yourself behind on rent, it's important to take proactive steps to address the situation and minimize any negative consequences. Here are some steps you can take:

Evaluate your situation: Determine how much rent you owe, how long you have been behind, and if you expect to have trouble paying rent in the future. This will help you plan your next steps more effectively.

Communicate with your landlord: Reach out to your landlord as soon as possible to explain your situation. Be honest and transparent about your financial difficulties, and express your intention to resolve the issue.

Create a payment plan: Propose a realistic payment plan to your landlord, detailing how you will pay the outstanding rent and catch up on payments. This could include making partial payments or agreeing to pay extra each month until the balance is cleared.

Prioritize your expenses: Review your budget and cut any non-essential expenses. Focus on paying for necessities like rent, utilities, food, and transportation.

Seek additional income: Look for ways to increase your income, such as taking on a part-time job, freelancing, or selling items you no longer need.

Apply for assistance: Explore local, state, and federal assistance programs that can help with rent payments or other living expenses. These may include rental assistance programs, unemployment benefits, or emergency assistance funds.

Talk to a housing counselor: Contact a HUD-approved housing counselor for free advice and guidance on your situation. They can help you understand your rights, negotiate with your landlord, and explore options for addressing your housing needs.

Know your legal rights: Familiarize yourself with tenant rights and protections in your jurisdiction. Some places have laws that protect tenants from immediate eviction or prohibit landlords from taking certain actions against tenants who are behind on rent.

Keep documentation: Keep records of all communications with your landlord, as well as any receipts, payment agreements, and other relevant documents. This will help you in case of a dispute or if you need to provide evidence of your efforts to resolve the issue.

Plan for the future: Develop a plan to avoid falling behind on rent again, including building an emergency fund, improving your budgeting skills, and finding more stable sources of income.

If you are unable to resolve the situation with your landlord, consider seeking legal advice from a tenant advocacy organization or a legal aid clinic to understand your options and rights.
