Do I have to come back to Nigeria before I can buy a property?

This is a question I get quite often from Nigerians living abroad.

And the answer is no. You can buy property in Nigeria without being physically present, but you have to be very deliberate about the process.

You need to know who you’re dealing with, inspect and verify the property, carry out the necessary legal checks, understand what you’re paying for, and make sure your documentation is properly handled.

Being abroad should not mean you have to rely on someone’s word or simply trust the pictures and videos you receive.

You should still have a clear view of what you’re buying and how the transaction is being handled.
