Solution to frequent building collapse!

A feasibility study of building structural deformation monitoring using Global Positioning System (GPS), terrestrial surveying technique (TST) and crack gauge measurement (CGM)

Abstract

Deformation of engineering structures is often monitored in order to ensure that the structure is exhibiting safe deformation behaviour. The deformation of high-rise building can be monitored using geodetic surveys and geotechnical/structural measurements. Geodetic surveys include conventional (terrestrial) and satellite (Global Positioning System); wherelse geotechnical/structural measurements detect either by using leasers, tiltmeters, joint-meters and micrometers. This research will discuss the capability of monitoring high and low-rise building structure using geodetic surveys (conventional and satellite) and geotechnical measurement (crack width measurement). Two buildings namely the Twin Tower of Science and Technology Complex and Innovation Centre Building of University Technology MARA (UiTM), Selangor, Malaysia are chosen for the research study. UiTM Twin Tower represents high-rise building, five control points were been established around the building in the monitoring work. Innovation Centre was monitored using nine monitored points. The monitoring exercises are carried out at four (4) different epochs. The Terrestrial and Global Positioning System (GPS) dataset in the monitoring exercise are process and analysed using the intersection technique and Trimble Geomantic Survey (TGO) software. Generally the monitored points for the Twin Tower Building experience movements within 1 mm to 10 mm. For Innovation Centre Building monitored points seem to shift between 1 mm to 9 mm. Detection of movement for both building's structure seems to be within the allowable tolerance. It is shown that monitoring building structure using the techniques adopted in this study has significant advantages and disadvantages.

ROLE OF SURVEYORS IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION

Land surveying is the science of determining the positions of points on the landscape and the distances between them. Land surveying plays a vital part in the beginning of a construction project, especially the construction of new roadways. Land Surveyors are qualified professionals who use sophisticated instruments to make precise measurements to determine the boundaries of your property or a construction site.

One of the most important services that a Land Surveyor provides is determining important points and the boundary of a construction site. The elevation of different points of the construction site and its distance from locations, such as water sources or areas where construction is not permitted can affect the boundaries of your project. Knowing that kind of information is vital for both architects and engineers; without it, they cannot formulate the appropriate designs or plans. The input of land surveyors can help avoid costly and dangerous errors in road building and roadway design.

The Location of Roadways
Land Surveying is a vital element in the process of designing and constructing a safe and cost-effective roadway. Land surveyors assist in finding the best locations for a road to be built. A land survey can help you plan a roadway design that avoids landscape features, which could prove an obstacle to construction, like areas where land sharply rises or falls. Land surveyors also help ensure that roads are not constructed in situations where they would be at risk to potential damage or dangerous conditions. One instance would be to not build a road near swamp ground, which could cause the road to cave in. They can also ensure that certain requirements and regulations are met when building a road in certain states and cities.

Road Design
When designing a road, many elements like how long and wide the road will be are taken into account, as well as what the road will be used for. The information land surveyors provide is necessary to help determine the best materials and construction techniques that should be used for that specific project. For example, if surveyors determine that a proposed roadway will have to pass through a region with steep rises and drops, their advice would be useful in determining whether the road should follow the contours of the land or whether cuttings or bridges should be included in the road design.

Key Takeaways:
Land surveyors measure elevations and distances with great accuracy.

A land survey can help find the best location for a road.

Understanding the terrain is vital to good design and construction.

The importance and use of topographic maps

Topographic maps is of great importance in many important studies that relate to various areas of life, because they accurately represent all phenomena on the surface of the earth, ie , all natural monuments and landmarks that are man-made. The topographic map of the most important tools used by the geographical and geological engineer , planned , agricultural , and schools the soil, and the military , and others, because it is the basis for land use classification, and planning for engineering projects , agricultural and studied, and in urban planning, and evaluation of urban , agricultural , and expense trends on the surface of the earth, and prepare designs of roads and railways and extending pipes and building airports, ports , dams and sewers, and to choose sites towers and power lines , and in the study of soil erosion and irrigation projects , and in mineral exploration , and national defense, and as a basis for maps other . , One of the most important means of studies geomorphological and geological , because it shows comprehensive information about the region lathe, also helps contours on maps topographic on the rating forms the surface of the earth and know a lot of aspects of geological and geomorphological in the region, such as cracks and faults , and cones and craters . As can be inferred tendencies and forms and degrees of knowledge . Also, for topographic map of great importance in the study of surface drainage , Vboisttha can know what type and location of the exchange . The study of topographic and geological maps together can learn a lot about the characteristics of the structure and to predict the type of soil and distribution in the region.
