She Took a Chance on Nicaragua 25 Years Ago. Here's What Happened.
It’s 2026. Still on the fence and speculating about what Nicaragua could become?
Let’s go back over 25 years.
Meet Maria Elena Barrow, now almost 93 years old, sharing her firsthand memories of discovering Rancho Santana long before it became what it is today.
While others questioned, she believed.
While others waited, she acted.
For me, this story is deeply personal.
My connection to Maria Elena began after my family’s first vacation to Rancho Santana in 2007. While exploring the old hotel, we came across her testimonial on the wall and were stunned to see she was from our hometown of Fort Pierce, Florida. Curious, we tracked her down, reached out, and the rest is history.
For nearly 20 years, she has been part of our lives and our Rancho Santana journey. What started as a chance discovery became a friendship that shaped generations of memories, opportunities, and a connection to Nicaragua that has shaped my family’s legacy.
She has been an Ambassador of Rancho Santana, very few people can make that claim.
Not because anyone hired her. Because she believed in the place.
For decades, she shared her stories, welcomed newcomers, answered questions, and helped countless people capture the dream and their own courage as a visionary of the potential she saw long before it became obvious. Many of those people became homeowners, neighbors, and lifelong friends.
In many ways, Maria Elena helped tell the story of Rancho Santana long before the world knew its name.
Now, with decades of perspective, she reflects on the transformation of what has become one of the world’s most remarkable coastal communities and the lessons that still matter today.
A rare conversation about vision, timing, and having the courage to believe in a place before the rest of the world catches up.
It was truly an honor to help preserve a piece of her story and share it with all of you. ✨
Don’t miss this special conversation with Maria Elena Barrow.
