Incubate: catalyst for cutting-edge culture
NO, there will not be another Incubate Festival, that ship has long sailed. BUT there will be something else. We notice a lack in good, honest, independent media for the obscure, the weird and the wonderful and will be attempting to start filling that void.
The incubate channels still have a hefty 25.000 followers, people that have trusted our tastebuds for cutting edge culture for over 12 years. We also still have a giant vault of high quality recordings of Incubate shows, video for years and a mega-filled digital rolladeck with artists that have something to say.
Expect weekly reviews, previews, news and interviews. Expect a lot of info on bands you have never heard of and on influential bands from the past. Expect the unexpected!

Neneh Cherry and RocketNumberNine
Artist Profile : Neneh Cherry & Rocketnumbernine
When Neneh Cherry started out around 1988, the press was mainly concerned about the fact that she went on Top of the Pops while she was seven months pregnant. A revolutionary thing in some way: how many popstars of the age Cherry had reached by then are mother and popstar at the same time and don't see this seperately?
In an interview with The Guardian Cherry recalls: "I remember standing there pregnant, and feeling charged by it – and proud, and very feminine, very woman."
This stepdaughter of famous trumpeter Don Cherry - who grew up in a big collective of musicians in Sweden - is nowadays praised for her music, which has always been very authentic. After she has been a major part of British pop history in the mid-nineties trip-hop underground she is back again since 2012 with albums "The Cherry Thing" and "Blank Project". Both of them developed through many collaborations, a way in which cherry is used to work since the beginning of her career - probably a logical effect from grewing up in a collective of so many musicians.
On Incubate Neneh Cherry will play her work together with London based duo RocketNumberNine, who have also been involved in the making of “Blank Project”.
Just a train of thought: did you know that Incubate festival 2015 is already taking place next week? Which act are you looking forward to the most?
Artist Profile: JEFF The Brotherhood
Although none of the two is named Jeff, Jake and Jamin are actually a brotherhood. Two brothers who have been making music since their teens and have recorded over 7 albums. Jake: We grew up out in the country. Not a lot of other kids around, so you spend a lot of time jamming and hitting trees with sticks. There was 500 acres behind us of unused land to explore. We started playing music together when we were kids and we started the band when I was 14 [and Jamin was 12]. The brotherhood has brought them places, having an album produced by The Black Keys’ Dan uerbach but also working together with Jack White and the Insane Clown Posse for a rendition of Mozart’s ‘’Leck Mich Im rsch’’. You can check out JEFF The
Brotherhood on Thursday September 17 at #INCU15
Unknown Mortal Orchestra - 19 september - Incubate festivall
Artist Profile - Unknown Mortal Orchestra
We all know Unknown Mortal Orchestra's Ruban Nielson, the group's singer, guitarist and songwriter, but did you know that bassplayer Jacob Portrait is also a sound- engineer when he's not playing those groovy baslines? Jacob has worked on records for for Blouse (his other band), Bass Drum of Death, Tops, Gauntlet Hairand Mint Chicks (Nielson's old band). Pretty neat right? Although Jacob is a talented producer, he's never recorded an Unknown Mortal Orchestra record. “To be honest, I’ve never asked to produce for UMO", Portrait says.
"Ruban and I talk about recording endlessly, but he records a lot by himself. Honestly, when he brings in songs, they’re pretty much finished. There isn’t much I or another producer could bring to Ruban’s songs.” Besides, Portrait has another job to focus on: “I like being in a band, and I like being a musician. I’m trying to enjoy that right now.”
Girl Band - Incubate
Artist Profile - Girl Band
Pitchfork states that "The obvious joke with Girl Band is that the Irish quartet features no girls" but, they say, the bigger misdirection is that they call themselves a band. Their music contains the common ingredients for punkrock such as a yelping singer, a lot of fuzz-box tweaking over the guitar and the bass and a pugilistic drummer. However, according to Pitchfork the music lacks the emotionally raw and primal relieve of emotions we associate with post-hardcore acts. "They come off more like steely lab technicians administering shock treatment for dubious purposes. You don’t so much listen to a Girl Band song as get strapped into it: militaristic drum stomps mimic the beat of your pounding heart; foreboding, unidentifiable noises emerge suddenly from unseen corners seemingly by the push of a button; and, as they pile on the punishment with sadistic glee, your convulsions effectively form a new dance move."
