We'll always have a soft spot for places that smell of salt and tar. This one's a former fisherman's sjöbod (sea shed) tucked on the shore of Bergön, an island in the Hälsingland archipelago, with a private sand beach, its own dock, and a west-facing deck built for the sunset. You don't get the whole island, but you do get a quiet corner of it all to yourself; reachable only by boat. It's from around 1900 and still wears its working past: mouth-blown windows, a gistvall where nets once hung to dry, an old båtlänning (boat launch) now closed in for extra room. Inside, a kitchen with a wood-fired stove, a living room with a kamin and a bed tucked into the corner, a sleeping loft up top, and a sauna with a brand-new heater.

The honest part: power and a well, yes, but no drains. The facilities are a characterful little utedass across the grass, and the only way to the plot is by boat. Happily, a boat comes with it. Your own stretch of shore, your own beach, your own sauna + the boat to reach them. It doesn't get much quieter than this.

Visit Telemark is the folk-soul of Visit Norway from fiddle tunes to rosemaling... and yes it's the place where telemark skiing was born. This 1941 håndlaftet (hand-hewn log) house sits right in the thick of it, in the hamlet of , among grazing goats and morning mist.

The walls are hand-cut timber, the windows the original small-paned glass, much of the fitting original to the build. Two living rooms: one white and full of morning light, the other bare timber for catching the evening sun off the western peaks. Plus a wood stove, a blue-painted hall, and three snug bedrooms up under the eaves.

Now the honest part: there's power and a well, but no bathroom and no toilet yet, so you'll be bringing the plumbing with you. In return, a sunny flat 471 m² plot made for a vegetable garden, mountain views from the pillow, and proper silence. Hiking out the door, the southern edge of Visitor Centre Hardangervidda on the doorstep, swimming and cross-country trails five minutes off... and, the real clincher, the famous Mjonøy AS bakery (pictured) a five-minute drive away.

Nøklabakken 2 sits in Lysøysundet on the Ørland peninsula, a small coastal community known for its archipelago, active boating culture, and the annual Lysøysund festival that the current owners list as a personal highlight. The cabin was built in 2006 on a freehold lot of just over a quarter acre, with the main floor holding a living room with a wood-burning stove, a fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher, a bathroom with heated floors, and two bedrooms. Falu rödfärg isn't a colour, it's a worldview. Woodsmoke, slow mornings, crimson quiet. This 1870 stuga outside Torsebro is the whole creed in 678 ft². Charming inside and out with four little rooms, a 521 m² garden, and nowhere else you need to be.

It's no hermitage either as central is 5 miles off, cycle path the whole way, bus every 15 minutes. The hush of the countryside, with an exit when you want one; which won't be often.
