The urinary system is a group of organs that filters blood to remove waste and excess water, producing urine in the process. It consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. The kidneys filter waste from the blood, the ureters carry urine to the bladder, the bladder stores the urine, and the urethra eliminates it from the body.
Parts of the urinary system and their functions
Kidneys: These are the main organs that filter waste products, toxins, and excess water from the blood to create urine. They also help regulate blood pressure and maintain a balance of chemicals like sodium and potassium.
Ureters: These are two thin tubes that carry urine from the kidneys down to the bladder.
Bladder: A hollow, muscular organ in the pelvis that stores urine. It expands as it fills and can hold up to 1.5 to 2 cups of urine.
Urethra: A tube that connects the bladder to the outside of the body, allowing urine to exit during urination.
How the urinary system works
Filtration: The kidneys filter blood to remove waste products like urea (from protein breakdown) and creatinine (from muscle activity), along with excess water and salts.
Urine production: After filtering, the kidneys process the waste, reabsorbing necessary substances and water back into the bloodstream. The remaining waste and water form urine.
Transport and storage: Urine travels from the kidneys down through the ureters to the bladder for storage.
Elimination: When the bladder is full, it signals the brain, and the body eliminates the urine from the body through the urethra.
