Is there any excuse for bad design? We hear it all the time; good design is too expensive, it’s too inefficient, it’s too complicated and so on.
Take two houses. Let’s pretend they’re both medium spec, there’s no fancy engineering, they have the same building methodology and all the materials are coming from the same manufacturer.
Why is one – mean, ugly and dispiriting? While the other is elegant, efficient and joyful?
What makes the difference? The builder is just fitting the same amount of stuff together, so he’s not the culprit. So how did the rooms get to be so badly proportioned? How come the windows are too big, too small, and in the wrong place? Why can’t I find the entry? Why does one use cladding that confuses the look of the house, whilst the other uses it to articulate the integrity of the design?
Good and bad design both share the same process, the same number of components and the same constraints. The same decisions requiring the same amount of energy have to be made for both. There’s your culprit. The only real difference between good design and bad is the quality of decision-making.
