Farewell Lisa — The Matriarch of the Kākāpō Legacy

New Zealand bids farewell to Lisa, the last female kākāpō from Stewart Island, who passed away last month. Her life was more than a story of survival — it was the beginning of one of the greatest conservation journeys in our history.

Lisa was among the first kākāpō rescued from Stewart Island in the 1980s, a founding mother of the species’ recovery and a symbol of hope for generations to come. Her resilience and gentle nature helped shape the foundation of today’s kākāpō sanctuary and breeding programme, ensuring these rare, flightless parrots had a second chance.

From the brink of extinction to over 240 individuals now thriving across predator-free islands, Lisa’s legacy lives on. Every hatchling, every echoing “boom” in the forest, carries a piece of her story — a reminder that one bird can inspire an entire nation to protect what’s precious.

Rest peacefully, Lisa. You will never be forgotten. 💚
