The HIKO Hub hosts the Inaugural Impact Lab Poster Session.

Twelve teams of students, with a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, showcased the projects they have been working on for the University of Waikato’s multidisciplinary team project programme, The Impact lab. Due to the large number of participants, a poster session was held for the first time to celebrate their achievements at the HIKO Hub, rather than our usual oral presentation format.

The Impact Lab accepts challenging projects with a sustainability focus, following the UN-SDGs sustainability parameters, including broadly the four pillars of Community Wellbeing, i.e. Social Equity, Cultural Vitality, Environmental Sustainability and Economic Prosperity.

The teams worked on a range of projects, over the Trimester, for the University of Waikato and for Enviro-Hub Bay of Plenty. Their Posters, displaying their work, were put on display on Level Two of the HIKO Hub.

The students, their mentors and invited guests were able to view these posters and there were prizes given for various judged categories.

The HIKO Hub was a buzz as we hosted the Tech in the Tron event, bringing together Waikato’s tech rock stars, University leaders, and Members of Parliament to support the tech industry forward!

At the Tech in the Tron event, we sparked lively discussions on attracting, connecting, and growing the tech sector, especially focusing on knowledge-intensive industries. Professor Gary Wilson highlighted the HIKO Hub's crucial role in linking University research, graduate students, and businesses.

Industry leaders shared their visions for a booming tech scene, emphasizing the power of collaboration. It wasn’t just talk; there was plenty of networking, idea-sharing, and epic stairwell banter. Here at the HIKO Hub, we’re not just making connections; we’re making the future!

“It is not just a space; it catalyzes innovation, collaboration, and growth. This initiative demonstrates a forward-thinking approach, creating an ecosystem that benefits all stakeholders” - Don Good, CEO of the Waikato Chamber of Commerce.

What’s in a name?

Well, we landed on HIKO because it vibes with our hopes of bringing big, bold ideas to life.

In te reo Māori, it means to ignite or electrify.

HIKO hub is so much more than an office or desk for lease. It’s a fully-fledged community of ideas people, plugged into an eco-system made up of some of the smartest people in Aotearoa.

And we reckon that makes for a pretty energising work place. ⚡⚡⚡⚡
