If the land is the basis for wellbeing (setting aside the other cultural imperatives, such as responsibilities of kaitiakitanga, whanaungatanga, and the inextricability of whakapapa and identity from the land), then it is no wonder that the theft of land has left Māori unwell – spiritually, culturally, physically, mentally.
