We came across what we think is a kōtukutuku in the regeneration - the world’s largest fuchsia. We are pretty sure it is because of the flaky bark (hence its name fuchsia excortica) and because it doesn’t have many leaves (one of NZ’s few (only?) semi deciduous trees). We have planted a few of these trees but haven’t had a great survival rate so it’s great to see one has found its own way here and appears to be thriving. We’ll check back in spring to check for flowers.

The fun thing about 25 hectares is discovering new places. The creek arising from a spring became visible after the big rains we had in January. We’ve been planting around the top of it for the last month but today, we were on a mission cutting down wilding pines and woolly nightshade and ended up a lot further down the creek and were able to easily climb up to the top.

As the forest grows, we’re spending increasingly time planting forest giants like this tawa.

We’ve spent the weekend enjoying planting trees to improve the biodiversity in lockdown gully. So satisfying to see how well the trees are becoming established and in many places starting to shade out the weeds.

We are loving this series of 100 plants in 100 days. Even though we are familiar with many of these plants, we learn something new about every one!

In the recent rains, we’ve had quite a few slips, you can see the damage here above the beach.

Roadside planting we did in 2021 doing what we wanted it to do; grow big enough to start shading out the weeds.
