First-home buyers are playing an increasingly important role in New Zealand’s property market, accounting for a record 29% of purchases in July 2026.

With home ownership firmly in the election spotlight, National and Labour have proposed different approaches to helping more New Zealanders buy their first home, from widening access to low-deposit lending to strengthening employer KiwiSaver contributions.

Both policies could make a difference, but the deposit is only one part of the affordability equation. Mortgage repayments, responsible lending and the supply of suitable homes will remain critical to creating sustainable pathways into home ownership.
