Why do we observe Remembrance Day on July 23rd?

After the Battle of the Coral Sea halted Japan's seaborne invasion of Port Moresby, their forces attempted a daring overland push across the Owen Stanley Range.
On this day in 1942, the opening shots of the legendary Kokoda Track Campaign were fired at Awala. The engagement pitted the Japanese South Seas Detachment against the brave soldiers of the Papuan Infantry Battalion and Australia's 39th Battalion.
This marked the very first time Papua New Guinean soldiers stood their ground in modern combat to protect their nation. Today, we pause to remember their legacy and that of the servicemen who served after them.
