LOOK: BORACAY BRIDGE PROJECT MOVES FORWARD AS DPWH TAPS SAN MIGUEL HOLDINGS; AKLAN STAKEHOLDERS VOICE CONCERNS

The proposed Boracay Bridge project is advancing after the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) selected San Miguel Holdings Corporation as the developer, despite continued opposition from local officials and residents in Aklan.

The project seeks to link Boracay Island to mainland Aklan through a permanent bridge, replacing the current reliance on boats from Caticlan.

Proponents said the bridge would improve accessibility, boost tourism efficiency, and strengthen logistics, especially during bad weather when sea travel becomes difficult or suspended.

However, the plan has drawn significant concern from Aklan stakeholders who warn of potential environmental and socio-economic impacts.

Critics cite risks to Boracay’s coastal ecosystems, including coral reefs and water quality, and caution against overdevelopment that could strain the island’s limited resources.

Some groups also raised questions about cultural disruption and whether local communities would directly benefit from the project.

Calls for transparency, environmental safeguards, and inclusive public consultation have grown as the plan progresses.

Stakeholders are urging government agencies and the developer to ensure that infrastructure gains do not undermine long-term sustainability.
