TO ALL SLU-MRH INTERNS: YOU ARE ALL REQUIRED TO ATTEND THIS SEMINAR ON FINANCIAL LITERACY.
“Do not save what is left after spending but spend what is left after saving.” – Warren Buffett
Finals are here, but have you been mindful of your spending?
The joy of indulging in a bit of retail therapy or saying “I deserve this” when making a purchase can bring temporary happiness, but is this truly a responsible way to manage our resources? Consumerism, particularly the tendency to overconsume, is something that we, as students, can easily fall prey to. Material possessions are often viewed as a means to define who we are, and the belief that acquiring more will lead to greater happiness or fulfillment can lead to a cycle of hyper consumerism.
As part of the Saint Louis University – Student Residence Halls’ mission to shape interns into mature, responsible, and compassionate individuals, we are presented with another enlightening opportunity: a plenary session focused on Financial Literacy. With the theme, “PERSONAL FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT: A MENTAL SHIFT TO FINANCIAL DISCIPLINE & RESPONSIBILITY,” this session will provide us with valuable insights on how we, as students, can cultivate responsible financial habits in a world full of temptations to spend recklessly.
Amidst the pressure of finals and the demands of academic life, it's easy to overlook the importance of planning for the future. Yet, through wise financial management, we can savor the present while also securing our future. It's not about denying ourselves what brings us joy, but rather about being intentional with our choices—aligning them with our core values and long-term aspirations.
By becoming more mindful of our consumption, we can foster a healthier relationship with money, embrace responsible consumerism, and ultimately pave the way for a more secure and fulfilling future. Let this be a step toward balancing the present with the wisdom of tomorrow.
