How to Read a Topographic Map

1. Contour Lines

Contour lines connect points of equal elevation. The spacing between lines shows slopesteepness—closer lines mean steeper terrain.

2. Index Contours

Every fifth contour line is bolder and labeled with its elevation, helping you understand the height faster.

3. Elevation Changes

Moving from one contour line to another means a change in elevation. The contour interval (printed onthe map) tells you how much elevation each line represents.

4. Reading Slopes

Wide-spaced lines = gentle slope. Tight-spaced lines = steep slope. Closed loops often indicate hills ordepressions.

5. Water Features

Blue lines and shapes represent rivers, lakes, and streams. Contour lines typically form a 'V' pointingupstream.

6. Colors on a Topographic Map

Green usually shows vegetation, white or light colors show open areas, and brown marks contour lines.
