In a significant international recognition, Iloilo City has been named one of the 20 global leaders in zero waste by the United Nations Secretary-Generalβs Advisory Board on Zero Waste. The announcement was made in Nairobi on March 27, 2026, ahead of the International Day of Zero Waste on March 30.
This prestigious initiative, β20 Cities Towards Zero Waste,β is supported by UN-Habitat and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It recognizes cities around the world that are taking bold and innovative steps to reduce waste, promote circular economy solutions, and build more sustainable and resilient communities.
Iloilo City stands proudly among a diverse group of global cities including San Francisco, Yokohama, and Bolognaβall known for their progressive environmental programs.
Even more notable, Iloilo is one of only two cities from the Philippines on the list, alongside San Fernando, reinforcing the countryβs growing role in global sustainability efforts.
