The PSEi made a strong start for year 2026 on improving confidence over the local economy after the latest manufacturing data pointed to a return to expansion mode.

The main index leaped by 82.14 or 1.36 percent to close at 6,135.06 as the Mining sector led the rally although the Services counter lagged behind.

Volume is still thin at 444 million shares worth P4.36 billion as gainers swamped losers 146 to 65 with 64 unchanged.

“The PSEi moved higher in the first trading session of the year. Buying pressure was seen across the board throughout the day,” said Regina Capital Development Corporation Managing Director Luis Limlingan.

He added that “the release of positive PMI figures for December helped renew investor confidence, supporting optimism for economic growth.”

Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation Chief Economist Michael Ricafort also said the PSEi gained for the first trading day of 2026 after the latest improvement in the local manufacturing PMI data to new four-month highs and back to expansion mode (above 50), at 50.2 in December 2026 from 47.4 a month ago (November 2025).
For the holiday-shortened first week of 2026, the PSEi gained by 69.42 points or 1.1 percent higher, up for the second straight week.

The PSEi rose after a lot of Philippine agricultural products were exempted from US tariffs while the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas raised hope one more rate cut, triggering more bargain-buying.
The main index jumped by 57.05 points or 0.99 percent to finish at 5,813.71 as Banks led the charge while Miners got left behind.
Volume was stable at 886 million shares worth P6.23 billion as gainers trounced losers 112 to 61 with 67 unchanged.
Regina Capital Development Corporation Managing Director Luis Limlingan said investor sentiment improved after the BSP signaled the possibility of another rate cut by the end of the year and “this expectation continued to support buying activity in today’s session.”
Philstocks Financial Research Manager Japhet Tantiangco noted that, “The local market rose as investors cheered the exemption of most of the Philippines' agricultural exports from the US' 19 percent reciprocal tariff. “
