BORA BORA, FRENCH POLYNESIA- A PLACE FOR HONEYMOON

One of the Society Island in the Pacific Ocean, Bora Bora is renowned today as one of the most luxuriously beautiful places in the world. Gaining popularity throughout and just after World War II (due to its use by the American army as a supply base), it is rumoured that a lot of the military personnel did leave Bora Bora after the war had ended as the island was so beautiful and relaxing.

Bora Bora, located about 160 miles northwest of Tahiti and approximately 2,600 miles south of Hawaii, was discovered in 1722, and is arguably the most beautiful island on the planet.

Its ancient name of Vava'u suggests that the original inhabitants of this seven-million-year-old island arrived from Tonga.

And interestingly, in the local Tahitian language there is no "B," so its actual name is then Pora Pora, meaning "first born."

Volcanic in origin, Bora Bora's rugged main island, and a few smaller islands, are completely surrounded by coral reefs.

Made famous by books, movies, and its stunning beauty, the island is now besieged by tourism and overcrowding. Regardless, if you must visit a South Pacific island (and you should), Bora Bora would be an excellent choice.

Known for its luxurious bungalows that are on stilts in the water, Bora Bora is an increasingly popular destinations for honeymooner’s.

CANÕ CRISTALES- THE WORLD'S MOST BEAUTIFUL RIVER

Deep in the jungles of Colombia runs an ordinary river with no distinguishable characteristics to call its own. In fact, you could cross this river several hundred times a year and never know it from any of the other rivers in the vast jungles near Macarena. However, if you did not know better and were to stumble upon this river during the brief period between the rainy and dry seasons, you would literally stop, your mouth hanging open in disbelief. Your first thought would be that you were dreaming and you would pinch yourself.

Realizing consciousness, your next thought would be to your sanity. If you were old enough, you would briefly worry about all the drugs you experimented with in the 60′s. Then you would look about frantically for tall blue people riding monster bird-like creatures with the absolute certainty that you stumbled upon the real Avatar tribe.

The explosion of color from the flowering moss that covers the rocks in this one place on earth is so amazing that it has earned this river names like, The Rainbow River, The River that Ran Away from Paradise, The Most Beautiful River in the World, and The River of Five Colors, which is weird because the literally hundreds of shades of each of these five colors is astonishing.

This natural phenomenon of algae does not occur anywhere else in the world in this combination and the conditions are only right for that very brief period of time when the water level is just right and the moss gets the perfect amount of sunlight. This unique, alien like place is only obtainable via horse or donkey and has only recently become a tourist attraction. This river, including waterfalls is truly a one of a kind experience that everyone should be lucky enough to see at least once in their lifetime.

Baclayon Church: the second oldest church in the Philippines

We all know that the San Agustin Church in Intramuros, Manila is the oldest stone structure church in the Philippines. But one wonders which is the second oldest church. Various historical records show that the Church of Baclayon, Bohol holds the title of second oldest church in the country.

The island province of Bohol is not only the site of one of the most breathtaking natural wonders, but also the location of the most historical colonial towns or pueblos, where there are well preserved old buildings that date back to the Spanish colonial times, including several of the oldest, but most impressive and magnificent churches in the archipelago.

One of the oldest church buildings in the history of the Philippines is the Baclayon Church. It is an interesting spot if you want to learn things about the early history of the Philippines especially during the era of Spanish occupation. We’ll look into the history of the Baclayon Church, and perhaps find a religious heritage.

The Baclayon Church was constructed during the Spanish occupation and the first Spanish missionaries (called doctrineros) settled in the area in the late 15th century. Today you can still see the original stone structure of the Baclayon Church, a short distance (6 km.) from Tagbilaran, Bohol. Baclayon is also the hometown of award-winning actor Cesar Montano.

There are other preserved church buildings in the region but the Baclayon Church is the best preserved among them. The church itself is Jesuit, but the Baclayon Church (the one we see today) was completed in 1727. The erected church building known today as the Baclayon Church is formally known as The Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.

The first Spanish missionaries or doctrineros in the region, Fr. Juan de Torres and Fr. Gabriel Sanchez, first settled in Baclayon in 1595. Shortly after their arrival, a visita was erected on the spot. Although Baclayon was the first seat of the Spanish Jesuit missionaries, fear of Moro mauraders soon forced them to move their headquarters more inland, to Loboc. Only in 1717, Baclayon became a parish, and construction of a new church commenced.

These artisans hauled coral stones from the sea, then skillfully cut them into square blocks, lifted the work using bamboo to move the stones into position, and piled them like bricks. About a million egg whites were used to cement the cut coral stones together. This was a testament to the great skill of these native artisans.

The Baclayon Church was completed in 1727 and a large bell was added in 1835.

The attractions we’ll see in the Baclayon Church include an old convent with a small museum. There you’ll see some centuries-old relics. Most artifacts you’ll see in the Baclayon Church museum are religious in nature. Antiquities of note are an ivory statue of Jesus Christ dating back to the 16th century, a statue of the Virgin Mary, St. Ignatius of Loyola’s relics, gold embroidered church vestments, a host of books and hymnals, and 1859 paintings of Liberato Gatchalian (famous Filipino painter).

Despite claims that the present stone church in Baclayon is the oldest in the Philippines, evidence places the construction of the church to 1727. The belief that the church was built in 1595 may have come because of a 19th century report by the Recollects that the mission was founded in 1595; but the same report lists two other dates 1593 and 1594. The date 1595 inscribed on the church façade is a later addition.

The adjoining but separate tower may have been started by the Jesuits, but it was completed during the administration of the Recollects, ca. 1777 as a stone inscription on the tower indicates. The inscription was recently defaced. The church complex was fortified with a wall built by the Jesuits. The walls' coral stones were used by the Recollects when they built a new wing of the convento in 1872.

Heritage Features: The church has two facades: an inner one which is Classical in inspiration, and outer one built in the 19th century by the Recollects is a portico decorated by three arches. The addition of porticoes to the façade seems to have been a style prevalent in Bohol and Cebu during the 19th century. Porticoes are found in Loay, Loboc, Cortes churches in Bohol, and Talisay, Recolletos, in Cebu.

The green and gilded altars are the focal point of the interior. They are exuberant versions of Baroque popular during the 18th century. Although the main retablo displays saints of Recollect devotion, the retablo itself traces to the Jesuits whose emblem and motto "Ad majorem Dei gloriam" surmounts the main altar. In the nave are found two benches carved in low relief. One features genre scenes: a goat tied to a tree, a coconut, nipa grove, and a man in stocks. A painting of the Ascension, Church Fathers and San Vicente Ferrer are found in the nave. These date to the 19th century.

The church had a pipe organ installed in the 1800s but now in disrepair. The choir and organ loft are decorated with cut out designs. The painting on the stucco finish of the church is of recent vintage (1996) and does not conform to the style and period of the interior.

Baclayon started the trend in Bohol of establishing parish museums. The amount of liturgical material preserved in Baclayon is impressive. The church inventory books have helped in dating some pieces. In Baclayon cantorals (large handwritten music books) was found the Misa Baclayana, a musical setting for the Mass which has been revived and is part of the repertoire of the Loboc Children's choir. Permission from the parish is needed to see the museum, which is generally locked for security reasons.

The Baclayon Church is a landmark in the history of the Philippines. Anyone who’s interested in the country’s early history can’t afford to miss seeing the Baclayon Church.

German Architecture: The Magdeburg Water Bridge

The Magdeburg Water Bridge is a navigable aqueduct in Germany that connects the Elbe-Havel Canal to the Mittelland Canal, and allows ships to cross over the Elbe River. At 918 meters, it is the longest navigable aqueduct in the world.

The Elbe-Havel and Mittelland canals had previously met near Magdeburg but on opposite sides of the Elbe. Ships moving between the two had to make a 12-kilometer detour, descending from the Mittelland Canal through the Rothensee boat lift into the Elbe, then sailing downstream on the river, before entering the Elbe-Havel Canal through Niegripp lock. Low water levels in the Elbe often prevented fully laden canal barges from making this crossing, requiring time-consuming off-loading of cargo.

Construction of the water link was started as early as in the 1930s but due to the World War 2 and subsequent division of Germany the work remained suspended till 1997. The aqueduct was finally completed and opened to the public in 2003.

Trou de Fer Gorge in The Island of La Reunion

Trou de Fer is one of the most spectacular sights of La Reunion, a French island lying some 650 km off Madagascar's east coast, close to Mauritius. It’s a gorge about a thousand feet deep between two cirques at the bottom of which flows the Bras de Caverne River.

The canyon has two distinct parts - a large crater, which is fed by six prominent waterfalls, and a narrow slot canyon at its outlet, which constitutes most of the canyon's length. The Bras de Caverne River's headwaters are in a cirque high on the mountainside abutting the canyon wall, and directly after that, it drops over a waterfall about 700 feet (210 m) high. This drop is usually dry or has very little water but between that and the next, 600-foot (180 m) drop, springs feed the river, which drops over this then drops over a final 1,000-foot (300 m) undercut cliff into the Trou de Fer in a narrow plume of water.

Over a distance of about 3.5km the river Bras de Caverne plunges down almost 930 meter over these three dramatic waterfalls and then winds its way along the narrow canyon till it joins the Riviere du Mat on its way to the Indian Ocean.

Because of gorges like Trou de Fer created from volcanic fractures access to the center of the island of Réunion is difficult. This has protected the island’s center from human encroachment, and its tropical forests, with giant heather, ferns, and lichens, have been preserved. Forests at low altitude, however, have been converted to agricultural or urban use and have disappeared. More than 30 species of animals and plants, of which about two-thirds were endemic, have become extinct on the island in the past 400 years. The destruction of the forest and the introduction of non-native species have a serious impact on these insular ecosystems, whose balance has been created without outside influences. On the island, the dodo became extinct shortly after the arrival of Western sailors, who brought cats, rats, and pigs with them.

THE MOST EXPENSIVE PHOTO EVER SOLD WAS PHOTOSHOPPED.

It’s called Rhein II, and was made by German visual artist Andreas Gursky in 1999. Last year, one of the prints was sold for $4.3 million, making the most expensive photograph ever sold. It is the second of a set of six photos of the River Rhine.

Gursky took the photo and removed details like buildings and people walking dogs. While that might make the price seem silly, or the photo not authentic, it seems to work for the betterment of the photo.

Gurksy justified it himself, saying "Paradoxically, this view of the Rhine cannot be obtained in situ, a fictitious construction was required to provide an accurate image of a modern river."

The image, which you can see on the right, has been described by arts writer Florence Waters as a "vibrant, beautiful and memorable – I should say unforgettable – contemporary twist on the romantic landscape.” Does it resonate with you at all?

The Marktkirche St. Georg and St. Jakobus is the main Lutheran church in Hanover.

It was built in the 14th century and, together with the nearby Old Town Hall, is considered the southernmost example of the North German neo-gothic architectural style. The roof and the vaults of the naves were destroyed in an air raid in 1943 and rebuilt to the same plan in 1952. Even though it has been the church of the Lutheran bishop of Hanover since 1925 it is not called a cathedral.

The church is a Hallenkirche (hall church) which means that the sidenaves are as high as the middle nave. Above the three naves rises a monumental saddleback roof. The high western tower was a symbol for the power and the wealth of the citizens of the town.
