The Karakoram Highway, also known as the “Road of China-Pakistan friendship”, winds its way south from Kashgar, located in China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, to Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital. The road, built by Chinese engineers in the 1970s, passes through the Pamir and Karakoram mountain ranges––some of the highest elevation terrain on earth.

The Karakoram Highway, which connects Pakistan and China, has been opened year-round for the first time.

Traditionally closed from December to March due to harsh winter conditions, the highway will now remain accessible throughout the year, thanks to the relentless efforts of the Frontier Works Organization (FWO).

The FWO is working tirelessly to keep the road open, including snow clearance and providing medical and recovery facilities for travelers.

This decision aims to boost tourism and trade between the two countries, making the Karakoram Highway a vital year-round route for both.
