🌍 Same latitude. Totally different lives.
and all sit on nearly the same line around the Earth.
At first glance, you’d expect them to share similar weather, right?
But reality tells a very different story.
Madrid experiences hot, dry summers and relatively mild winters, thanks to its position near the Atlantic and Mediterranean influences.
New York City, on the other hand, has a much wider range of temperatures — from humid summers to freezing winters with snowstorms.
Meanwhile, Pyongyang faces even harsher winters, with colder temperatures and more extreme seasonal swings.
So what’s causing this difference?
It comes down to more than just latitude. Ocean currents, prevailing winds, elevation, and distance from large bodies of water all play a huge role in shaping local climates. Western Europe benefits from warm ocean currents, while inland and eastern regions tend to experience more extreme conditions.
This is a perfect example of how maps only show part of the story. Two places can share the same position on the globe… yet feel like completely different worlds.
Geography isn’t just about where places are — it’s about how they live.
