When a thirsty and exhausted young man from Badghis spoke these heartbreaking words to his mother during the final bitter moments of his life in the scorching sand dunes of Nimroz, he probably never imagined that thousands of Afghans would one day watch his video, and that his message would break so many hearts.
The story of 33-year-old Hayatullah, a resident of Boom Valley in Badghis—one of Afghanistan's most remote and underdeveloped provinces—reflects the reality faced by thousands of Afghan youths. Forced by poverty and hopelessness, they embark on dangerous migration journeys in the hope of earning a living and building a better future.
As the burning winds of the Margo Desert blew through his hair, scorching his face and eyes, Hayatullah recorded himself on his mobile phone, hoping to preserve his final message.
When the bodies of Hayatullah and his companions were eventually found, rescuers discovered his mobile phone in his pocket and returned it to his family. The same video, which is now being widely shared across social media and whose original copy has been obtained by the BBC, was recorded on that very phone.
