Creel fisherman Lorn MacRae came across the Arctic animal hauled out on rocks at the Treshnish Isles on Monday.

The Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust (HWDT), which has been alerted to the sighting, described the walrus as "massive".

In December and early January a walrus nicknamed Thor was seen on the south and east coasts of England, before turning up in Iceland last week.

HWDT, a marine charity that has been monitoring wildlife off Scotland's west coast for more than 25 years, said Monday's sighting was the first record of a walrus on its database.

Towards the end of the Iron Age, new ingredients like olives and coriander began to be imported, the team said.

Archaeologists believe analysing the grains could highlight how diets changed.

A wind farm on forest land near Newton Stewart has been approved by the Scottish government.

Developers Statkraft want to construct 12 turbines at Artfield Forest about five miles (8km) north west of Kirkcowan.

Two community councils had objected to the proposals on the grounds of their cumulative impact combined with other wind farms in the area.

A second terra cotta coloured tile with small indentations is believed to be the imprint of nails on the bottom of a woman's sandal, as it showed a very narrow foot shape.

"It looks like women were working in the tilery as well, so it's not as clear cut as we thought," Mr Gilmour said.

"The workers were not just young male slaves - these markings show there were literate men and women in nice shoes as well, so it was more of a mixture.

She added: "What's really encouraging is because we're getting regular annual sightings, which were quite rare in recent years, it does suggest that we might have some kind of population increase happening, which is brilliant for marine life recovery."

Drone footage captured by Richard Brindley shows a humpback whale off the coast of St Ives.

He said: "I'd seen footage of it from the day previous and was quite surprised to see it in the bay."

"When dolphins obtain this pressure from sonar, it destroys the acoustic system fully. He [the dolphin] has no possibility to navigate himself, so he has to struggle and probably to crash... [We] just saw dolphins without any marks. When we saw dolphins before [the] war, we saw [marks] from the net on the body or cutting fins," he says.

Dolphins and porpoises use ecolocation – a biological form of sonar – to navigate and communicate, whistling, squeaking, buzzing and clicking their way through the water. There's now considerable evidence to suggest a link between the naval use of sonar and acoustic trauma in cetaceans. In 2000, after a mass stranding in the Bahamas, the US Navy determined for the first time that the cause was sonar used in exercises. Researchers found that the largest mass stranding event in the UK, in Cornwall in 2008, was probably caused by naval activity. At least 26 short-beaked common dolphins died in the incident after international naval exercises, including the use of mid-frequency sonar, had taken place nearby just four days earlier.

These studies corroborate the findings of numerous other studies: that students consume higher amounts of alcohol, takeaways and fast food, salt, sugar and saturated fat than recommended. Although, it is worth bearing in mind that most studies rely on self-reporting, so data isn't totally reliable.

While eating 'like a student' isn't likely to be too harmful in the short term, research suggests that unhealthy eating behaviours increase as we get older and are linked to higher risk of certain diseases in adulthood, including heart disease.

"The offers of junk food get them into a culture of thinking this is an acceptable and normal meal. You get a lot of adults coming through university and eating unhealthy stuff at the other end," Nikolaou says.

This investigation has revealed that there are many more ways than one to reduce the emissions from your food choices while getting ample quantities of protein. While cutting the amount of animal products in your diet is a powerful way to reduce emissions, there are other swaps that make a difference too.

If one didn't want to give up animal protein entirely, for instance, the next best thing would be to adopt a diet that consists only of eating small animals (chicken, duck, rabbit), eggs and yoghurt, according to Marbach's research.

By sticking to this "low CO2, high-protein diet", a person can reduce their individual carbon footprint by up to 50%, says Marbach. Adopting a vegetarian diet, which contains a lot of dairy products, especially cheese, is not nearly as effective as the "low CO2" option, says Marbach. It will only reduce a person's food GHG footprint by 20%, according to her analysis.

Located outside a former sports arena in a Budapest suburb, the boots seemed in the unlikeliest of locations – but this was in fact the entrance to what might be one of the world's most curious tourist attractions. Describing itself as "Central Europe's first thematic museum that reminds people of a dictatorship and its fall", Memento Park is a graveyard for communist statues toppled during the country's transition to democracy.

Inside this peculiar open-air museum, gigantic monuments of Red Army soldiers stand next to busts of Lenin, while heroic reliefs of Hungarian workers sit by statues of former communist leaders. And at a time when many countries around the world are grappling with the purpose and meaning of statues, this Budapest site offers a potential model for discussing historical monuments, rather than simply removing them.

Does all of this mean that Covid-19 lockdowns were a bad idea, and put children at risk unnecessarily?

"I absolutely refute that," says Cheung, noting that Covid-19 itself was extremely dangerous and caused large numbers of deaths. Lockdowns, being so disruptive, were likely always going to affect people in negative ways – from the economic impact to effects on mental health and, apparently, disrupting immunity to other viruses.

"This is a cost that we knew we had to bear," adds Cheung. "On balance, it was still the right course of action."

Orr also sees a green World Cup as being hosted by one main country – allowing them to get the benefit of the publicity and tourism brought by the event. "If we have such a decentralised event that all the players and all the teams are in different places, then you've got teams flying all over the world back and forth, which doesn't make any sense."

The offset question

In the longer term, the world could start to see more widespread decarbonisation of aviation through alternative renewable fuels (or even electric planes over short distances), opening up more opportunities for low-carbon travel. Until the time when these kinds of options exist and are affordable, however, the question of offsets is likely to remain.

Offsetting means paying for an external project to reduce or sometimes absorb the emissions a country, organisation or person is emitting. But some argue in many cases they simply don’t work as intended, as, for example, it can be hard to ensure a forest stays standing or be sure a renewable power plant would not have been built even without the investment. Environmentalists are therefore concerned offsets can act as a “dangerous distraction” from what’s really needed – cutting emissions.

Fishing has been the backbone of the island's economy for more than half a century. Toshiya's family moved to Rishiri from mainland Japan in the 1940s when his grandfather sought to make a living in the booming kombu business. At the time, Rishiri's population was at its peak and there were close to 20,000 people living on the island, most of whom made a living fishing the abundant herring.

Today, declining fish stocks, an ageing population and a lack of economic opportunities in the winter season have pushed most young people to search for fortune in large cities like Sapporo (the capital of Hokkaido) or Tokyo, leaving little more than 5,000 mostly elderly residents behind.
