Born in Texas in 1895, Inez Beverly Prosser was the oldest of eleven children in a family with barely enough to get by. College wasn't in the plan until her older brother convinced their parents to send her instead of him. She never wasted that chance.

Prosser earned her teaching certificate, then her bachelor's degree, all while working. She taught in segregated schools across the South, and used part of her own earnings to help her younger siblings get through high school and college too. Five of them went on to earn degrees, because their big sister refused to let poverty be the end of the story.

Then she went further. In 1933, Prosser earned her Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Cincinnati becoming the first Black woman in American history to do so. Her doctoral research on Black children in segregated versus integrated schools became a cornerstone of the legal case for Brown v. Board of Education, the ruling that struck down segregated schools for good.

Just a year after earning her degree, Prosser was ki*led in a car accident at 38. But the door she forced open never closed again.
