Visited my landlord-client who sadly suffered a major stroke recently, now bedridden, unable to speak or move or open his eyes and on tube feeding. I bought him a JBL speaker with built-in FM radio, hoping to lift his spirits. I shared with him about this “new toy” and assured him that there’s nothing to worry about on the property front — I’ll have his wife’s back through everything.
His wife teared up, visibly moved. Moments later, he too teared, and I noticed his eyelids twitching gently, as though acknowledging what he heard and pleased by the gesture.
Today, his wife sent me a short video of the radio playing beside him. Again, I saw his eyelids and lips twitching, subtle movements that felt like a smile. It’s humbling how a small act can mean so much. When he was well, he shared his past experiences as a country head of a global financial institution and his unique way of recruiting top talents and managing people.
On a practical note, I’d like to take this opportunity to encourage everyone to consider making a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). In unexpected situations like a stroke, accident, or sudden illness — when one loses the mental capacity to make decisions — an LPA ensures that someone trusted can step in to manage important affairs.
