Moving a piano through narrow spaces requires careful planning because even a small mistake can damage the piano, walls, floors or door frames. Before moving, measure the piano, doorways, corridors and tight turns to make sure there is enough clearance.

Start by removing obstacles from the route. Take away rugs, furniture, decorations and anything that could get in the way. Protect walls and door frames with moving blankets or padding, especially around corners and narrow passages.

Use a suitable piano dolly with secure straps to support the piano during movement. Keep the piano balanced and avoid dragging it directly across the floor. For grand pianos, some parts may need to be removed by experienced movers to reduce the size and make the piano easier to handle. Upright pianos usually remain assembled, but this depends on the model and route.

I first came through Singapore in 1988 on my way to Brussels for a 1 year job as a 22 yo. I was chauffered to the Hyatt on Scotts and had drinks in the old Brannigans and met my first Singapore ho**er (I was very naive). I was back in 1990 on a SEA student tour and spent a few days here - at the REC hotel (up near Pearl Hill) and the YMCA on Orchard. I decided I wanted to be up here more but everyone discouraged me. I was in Indonesia on another youth exchange program 1990/1991 Xmas break and decided I liked the region even more but didn't know how to get here. Come March 1991 I'm sitting in a crappy job in Perth literally counting resistors for $100 a week and friend rings on a Thu and says "Hey, PNGMK, have you got a passport?". I did actually. He said "I need a guy offshore Vietnam by next Tue and the EE I hired doesn't have a passport and it's USD50,000 per year TAX FREE". I went straight to my boss and resigned - to give Ray Godley credit he stood up, shook my hand and .....

This is called downshifting in the West, and is quite a common aspiration. A good friend of mine back in the U.S. who is a civil engineer told he he will become a Walmart greeter (a person that greets customers at the door when they walk in the store) once he can afford to get off the hamster wheel.

This resonates well with me. When I was much younger and working for an American MNC, I would see older and senior colleagues based out of the US who were individual contributors. Content. Not climbing the corporate ladder. I couldn't understand why anyone would do that.

You are absolutely right. There was another aspect that played a subtle but an important part in my decision. The compass framework and my EP being downgraded to Spass.

It wasn't a big deal to be honest. But psychologically it was a signalling that they want Work pass holders here to be at the top of their game.

They made age and work experience as the criteria for minimum salary. Whereas my entire career philosophy was the opposite. I always believed that I should be able to negotiate a lower pay .....

Long-time lurker, first post. I would really appreciate the regulars' views on timing for our family's SC application.

Our profile:

Main applicant: M, mid-30s, Vietnamese. Bachelor's degree from a Vietnamese university. In SG since 2019 (EP, then PR). Engineering manager at a tech MNC. Annual income S$400K. Changed employer in 2026 within the same industry, no gap in employment.

Spouse: F, early 30s, Vietnamese, homemaker. In SG since 2022. Bachelor's degree from a Vietnamese university

Son: 3, born in Vietnam, in SG since 2024, attends a local preschool.

Daughter: infant, born in Singapore in 2026, PR recently.

Race: Others (all Vietnamese). No family ties to Singaporeans.

Family PR approved Sept 2025, so about 1 year of PR now.
