This article was in yesterday Sunday ST which I think maybe a good read for you. The article highlights the use of such misled belief that "99-1 ownership arrangment to minimise ABSD amount" sale pitch in the property industry. It is unfortunate if this advice was given to property buyers as it is clearly not possible to minimise ABSD with 99-1 ownership arrangement.

The original intention of 99-1 property ownership was for asset progression planning. For example, for young couple just starting out in their career and just managed to save for their first property may consider buying their first property with 99-1 share ownership. In their later years, their income may grow which allow for their second property purchase. To allow this 2nd purchase without paying ABSD on their 2nd property, the couple may choose to decouple with the purhcase of the 1% by the 99% owner. This will free up the name of the 1% owner from their 1st property ownership and thus allows the freed-up name to be used for the purchase of their 2nd property as this will be then be his/her first property purchase.

It was never the intention (or impossible) of 99-1 ownership arrangement to minimise ABSD.
