Status of TPAO Operations in Somalia

In October 2024, the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) began 3D seismic surveys offshore Somalia. The process was initially estimated to take seven months, according to TPAO at the project’s outset.

3D seismic surveying is a technique used to understand subsurface geology and assess the potential presence of oil and gas. The operation involves a vessel towing streamers equipped with air guns that generate sound waves. These waves travel through the water and seabed, reflecting back upon encountering different underground layers. The returning signals are then analyzed from an onboard control center.

Survey work has been completed in Blocks 152 and 153. Currently, the research vessel Oruç Reis is conducting operations in Block 142, which is expected to conclude soon. Although the project was initially expected to last seven months, it is now experiencing slight delays.
