George McLauren, the first black man admitted to Oklahoma University in 1948, was forced to sit in a corner of the room, far from his white peers. But his name remains on the honor roll to this day as one of the college's top three students. These are his words: "Some colleagues looked at me as if I were an animal, no one gave me a word, the teachers seemed like they weren't there for me, nor did they question me." But I devoted myself so much, that then they began looking for me to explain and clarify their questions." "The only weapon capable of transforming the world is education."

Last Friday, Ambassador H.E. Paul Tholen and Eye Media CEO Stephen Omiri signed a 6-month partnership agreement to boost independent media in South Sudan. Media freedom and freedom of expression are a cornerstone of the Dutch human rights policy.

Ambassador Paul Tholen stressed the importance of media freedom in South Sudan as the reason why the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands provides support to Eye Media: “Free media contributes to the free and open public debate, the backbone of democratic and inclusive societies. The work of free media is essential for countering disinformation and ensuring citizens have access to credible information. The current situation in South Sudan calls for support to independent and objective journalism: now, more than ever.”
